An Oklahoma State University sheep specialist says the state’s sheep numbers may rise after two decades of decline. He cites higher profits from meat and wool, new interest from wheat farmers, and three industry segments, with major counties listed and total ≈79,000 sheep.
The Agriculture Department notes the 1977 corn harvest nears half completion by Oct 16, ahead of average. Soybeans at 33 percent lag the 47 percent norm as farmers focus on corn. Winter wheat planting at about 80 percent aligns with the 84 percent average. Livestock pastures improve in the East but moisture remains short in the West. Southern cotton harvest at 42 percent exceeds last year’s pace.
The Agriculture Department announced that despite nationwide weather problems and West droughts, fresh market vegetable supplies this fall may be about six percent higher than last year. Grower prices may be slightly lower while retail prices are expected to rise seasonally and be near last year’s fourth quarter levels.

New Agricultural Service estimates indicate U.S. exports of meat and related livestock products for 1976 77 exceeded imports for the first time, totaling about 2.2 billion dollars versus 2.0 billion in imports. Beef and pork sales, hides, lard, and other categories make up the bulk of the export value.
USDA projections indicate the 1978 corn carryover could reach 1.35 billion bushels by Oct 1 1978, the largest since 1964, due to an expected 6.3 billion bushel harvest and a carryover of 876 million this fall. Officials say surplus arises when domestic use and exports lag behind production.
Four Oklahoma 4 H youth groups join 716 peers from four states for the American Royal 4 H Conference in Kansas City. The three day event features tours of 13 local industries plus educational and recreational sessions and sponsor financed banquets under the theme The Total You. Oklahoma State University specialist Merl Miller notes the program emphasizes mental spiritual emotional and educational growth as speakers guide students. Delegates travel by four buses from central locations and return November 15.
Washington AP reports farmers harvest record corn and soybeans in 1977. Oct 1 estimates set corn at 6.3 billion bushels and soybeans near 1.65 billion, with corn yield about 90.8 bushels per acre. Wheat totals gauge at 2.03 billion, keeping grain stocks high into 1978.
The Agriculture Department reports rising farm assets reached a record 670.9 billion on January 1, up 13 percent from 1976, while net farm income fell to about 20.1 billion from 21.9 billion. Farm debt also climbed to a record 102.1 billion, up 12.5 percent from 1976.
