World disarmament conference in Geneva recesses until Oct 26 after a dramatic session. Arthur Henderson outlines Germany's withdrawal and Neurath’s stance, while Salvador de Madariaga questions future aims as delegations prepare to consult governments.
Oklahoma City report notes Kathryn Kelly testifed to a second marriage to L. E. Brewer who ran a theatre at El Reno. Brewer divorced her on a statutory charge, and records show she sold tickets at Brewer's theatre as the Ursenel kidnapping trial unfolds.
A lightning strike near Durant Oklahoma killed Johnny Potter age five and seriously injured his father Will Potter as a severe storm hit the area. The same storm toppled cotton stalks damaged trees and a tornado path northwest of Colbert left four homes destroyed with no injuries reported. In Sayre a separate tornado killed farmer Frank Yandell seventy seven his wife seventy four and great grandson Luther Lawrance nine while Nadine Lawrance seven was seriously injured. Nearby Rev John Wesley Campbell seventy three Methodist minister died at his Conway Arkansas home after an extended illness.
President Roosevelt announced the treasury offered 500 million dollars in a new bond issue was oversubscribed nearly four times with mail subscriptions still coming. Books closed on the cash issue show subscriptions near 2.006 billion dollars. Bonds mature in 12 years, callable in ten, with 4.3 percent interest first year and 3.3 percent thereafter. The cash issue accompanied an exchange offer for Four Liberty bonds, about one third called, and exchange responses were similarly strong.
The American Federation of Labor convention voted to boycott goods and services from Germany and other nations that deny free trade union rights or persecute people. The policy covers Germany Italy Russia China and any other country under similar conditions and aims to halt persecution and restrict anti union practices.
Oklahoma City report states Adjt. Gen. Charles F. Barrett announced a plan after a Kanawa armory burglary. Small arms will be kept dismantled with vital parts removed to render weapons useless to outlaws. Barrow brothers Marvin and Ivan were named as victims of the order.
Washington reports an emergency conservation program authorizing 4 million dollars for six months to operate and maintain reforestation camps on 65 reservations. It aims to employ about 14,400 Indians through forest work including fire fighting and trail construction, with total Indian land value expected to rise. An Italian set a flight speed record of nearly 394 miles per hour in a separate note.
Leavenworth reports George Kelley known as Machine Gun Kelly is placed in solitary confinement with 140 of the prison's toughest inmates. Officials expect transfer to Alcatraz after Warden Zerbst returns from Washington for talks with the Justice Department. Kelly is fingerprinted photographed and kept under constant guard in his cell with no meals outside.
In Poplar Bluff Missouri investigators say money totaling 2769 dollars was hidden in jars of jam jelly and apple butter at the home of Clarence Channel a 32 year old substitute mail carrier. Channel allegedly placed the cash in jars after a registered parcel theft involving 3000 dollars from Reyne Arkansas. He was bonded at 5000 dollars and attempted to leap from a third floor window during questioning.
Joseph Bergl and Charles Caplan were accused by the government of obstructing justice by helping harbor George Machine Gun Kelly and his wife Kathryn in Chicago for five days before their Memphis capture. Bergl, a Cicero garage owner, was linked to armoring the bandit’s sedan and was held on a $15,000 bond with Caplan for a hearing on Oct. 20.
Dun and Bradstreet said the first full week of seasonable weather sparked sharp increases in retail distribution, especially in rural areas. Labor difficulties ease, banking facilities rebound, and employment and payrolls rise, creating a new public psychology focused on spending over hoarding.
Washington Oct 14 The department of agriculture reports this week cotton grade softened on average from last week though staple length remains steady. The share of extra white cloth rose slightly while white strict middling and better fell notably. Spocted and yellow tinged cotton rose 39 percent from 29 percent, with uniform belt increases except in Arkansas and Florida, led by Texas Oklahoma and three western states.
Delinquent personal property taxes totaling about 30 000 have been placed with Sheriff Clyde Kaiser for collection. Two collectors will handle the warrants and taxpayers may pay at the sheriff's office to avoid mileage charges. The notice warns of penalties for nonpayment. Cleveland Marie Barkley, 14, has repeatedly run away from home, moving from bicycle to roller skates to walking and now an automobile.
The city of Allen Oklahoma grants a community lease to Harry Hawkins for oil drilling on school property and cemetery land. The first well will be about 300 feet from the north line in section 25-5-8 center of the north half with operations to start soon and not disrupt schooling. A second well will be drilled on cemetery property south of Allen with production hoped for under 1000 feet. Taxpayers expect revenue from townsite production as two minor producers already operate nearby.
Local officials pursue federal aid to fund a new Irving school as the old building nears failure. A board member and architect visit Oklahoma City to review eligibility while unpaid warrants and back taxes delay final approval. If funded, the government would cancel 30 percent of the cost and finance the rest at a low interest rate over several years.
Arbour Mich October 18 Stephen J Farrell known as a premier storyteller and international track figure died suddenly of a heart attack. The retired Michigan coach who left Yale Maine and Ohio State coached at Michigan from 1912 until his 1930 retirement and would have been 70 in December. He once outran a horse as a circus stunt and earned living betting on himself in major races.
A $25,000 damage suit filed against Hugh Nichols of Mexia Texas over an August 9 accident that killed a 5 year old girl was stricken from the docket. Under the settlement Bob Aflen father of the child will receive $2250. Attorneys said Nichols caused the fatal collision when his car struck the girl.
Charley Winchester faces grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing two leather chairs from the Legion room in Convention Hall. Justice S. W. Hill set October 27 for a preliminary hearing and fixed a 3000 dollar bond for Winchester’s appearance.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed and remanded the murder conviction of C. B. Yarbrough of Bell County in the death of his adopted daughter Doris. He was tried in Travis County on venue change and sentenced to 25 years. Reversal cited failure to include his declarations and to instruct on circumstantial evidence. Yarbrough claimed accidental clothing fire and that a gasoline bucket was thrown by mistake to douse flames.
Bus and truck operators in Pontotoc county met to form the Pontotoc county chapter of the Associated Motor Carriers of Oklahoma. Vernie Luper and B D Denton were named temporary chairman and secretary, with monthly meetings planned. The next gathering is set for Wednesday November 15 in Ada, with state representatives present.
The government will tax floor stocks of pork and pork products held by processors and wholesalers starting November 4, with a 50 cent per hundredweight rate rising to 2 dollars by February 11. The tax on hogs liveweight remains lower, and floor stock taxes will also apply to corn held by processors. Retailers face a 30 day exemption for existing inventory.

Berlin October 14. The German government assured US Ambassador William E. Dodd that Nazis who molest Americans will be pursued. Von Neurath apologized for the delay and promised thorough handling, with further mutual talks proposed as the case proceeds toward a satisfactory solution.
In Tennessee, Floyd Johnson, 27, Lafollette filling station operator, was found guilty by a Campbell county jury of burning his wife and three children to death on August 30. The jury recommended 21 years in the state penitentiary. Johnson claimed escape from the fire and denied plotting with a witness to start it.
U S Senator David A Reed of Pennsylvania urged Republicans to back the recovery program as patriotic duty while reserving the right to dissent if the country is on the wrong track. He spoke to Republican women in Johnstown Pennsylvania urging support for the NRA plan.
Oklahoma City Oct 17 state supreme court sustains dismissal of ouster accusations against Ralph L. Busey Hughes county attorney. Charges quashed March 7 by Judge John B. Ogden Ardmore finding improper county commission actions and a closed meeting with only James Springer present. Evidence of drunkenness not an issue on appeal.
