Beef prices revised show smaller rise for consumers

Harold Wingard began leveling 30 acres of bottomland near Roff planning a well flood irrigation and alfalfa planting. Forest McClung aided staking cuts and fills. Hollis Gallup showed 100 acres of hairy vetch and rye on midland Bermuda grass now five inches high with 150 cows grazing. Landowners Wayne Pennington and W H Mills north of Gaar Corner prepare land for midland Bermuda grass next spring. Pennington 20 acres of timber cleared, Mills 45 acres plowed for Bermuda. Spring planting prep is under way as winter freeze thaw aids spring work.

Food Labor Costs Rise Faster Than Retail Prices in 1969
The Agriculture Department reports labor costs in moving food from farms to consumers rose faster than retail prices in 1969. Wages in food distribution averaged $2.54 to $3.01 per hour, up at least six percent from 1968, with overall wage and fringe benefit growth driven by higher productivity. The farm share of the consumer food dollar reached 41 cents in July–September, up from 39 cents a year earlier, driven largely by higher livestock prices.

Hardin Plans New Steps To Restrict DDT
Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin proposes accelerating limits on persistent pesticides after moves to end all but emergency uses of DDT by 1970. He would cancel DDT registrations for home gardens tobacco fields and aquatic uses within 30 days and ban all nonemergency DDT use by December 30 1970. He plans similar action against other persistent pesticides in March using the same criteria. The plan would halt interstate sale of about 14 million pounds of DDT, about 35 percent of U S usage, though current stocks remain usable.
