City Marshal Dick Couch pursued a Black man near the town, firing a public safety item after the suspect dodged behind trees. The round struck behind the right ear, fatally wounding the man. Couch surrendered and was later acquitted at a preliminary exam before Judge Talbott.
W L Reed, president of the First National Bank, purchases bank stock and resident property of A G Phippen, gaining controlling interest and active management. The Phippens plan to move to Whitewright, Texas, leaving many friends here. Reed is praised as a permanent, valuable citizen and the bank is expected to prosper under his leadership.
The Ada School Board warns taxes collected to date are far below expectations and funds are inadequate to pay teachers and expenses. Board members borrowed personally and teachers hypothecated vouchers to obtain loans. The board urges taxpayers to pay promptly, noting Ada National Bank and Laidiaw Lumber Co. have pledged to pay now.
Sam Harris plans a large upscale hotel on Main Street with three stories and two additional levels, claiming 15 feet wide frontage. The building will be furnished luxuriously and include two first floor spaces for offices and a dining room, with the entire second floor allocated accordingly.
At Holdenville on the 28th the executive committees of Indian Territory nations elected R W Dick as president H A Kroger secretary and B F Jobe treasurer Resolutions protested absorption of Indian Territory by Oklahoma in the Omnibus statehood bill and endorsed the Moon bill Two delegates Sam Powell and W H L Campbell were chosen to attend Congress this winter Also discussed endorsed U S purchase and trust of coal and asphalt lands of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations Delegates adjourned to meet at South McAlester on December 16.
During a pugilistic bout in Oklahoma City on November 22 a spectator melee erupted. Goldie Filson was killed, Ed Filson fatally wounded, and John Wilkins seriously wounded. Ed Filson attacked spectator Chas. Kent before the shooting began.
Ed Filson, in an ante mortem statement, claims Wilkins did the shooting, though Wilkins denies it. Goldie was shot through the head and died instantly. Filson was shot in the lungs and remains alive, while Wilkins is expected to recover.
On October 7 a six months old pointer pup white with blue spots disappeared. A liberal reward will be paid for its return to the address provided.
The U S District Court will use three Harris buildings as interim quarters after the contract closed this week. The District and Commissioner courts will continue there until the new U S courthouse is completed.
Mayor H. T. Drury of Ada proclaims December 20, 1902 as election day for four Ada school directors two to serve three years and two for two years. Appointed judges are KR. S. Floyd A. A. Hodges and E. L. Canterberry with clerks A. H. Constant and W. S. Kerr.
Canton Wave states that on December 1 the Dallas News will lower its price from 1.00 to 75 cents per month and urges readers to subscribe as the best daily or weekly newspaper in the Southwest. The writer asks for continued patronage of the present agent.
The school plans Thanksgiving observances while Rev. McDonald visited with his son John enrolled. Students attended Claud Chambless’s funeral last Friday and Miss Elnora Show and Miss Belle Wilson with Mr Broadfoot visited the school. Willa Wilson will visit relatives near Francis for Thanksgiving. New pupils continue entering as work progresses under Mr Scarborough. A squirrel hunt occurred last Friday with Mel and John noted for shooting. Will Ross and Henry Lovelady have nearly sold their cattle. Loss Carter moved near Stonews. A Baptist church gathering at Pleasant Till saw members away but return ready to do right.
Mud and floodwater dominate Blackburn area with 48 crops nearly gathered and livestock in poor condition making wintering hard. Locals Henry Lovelady Dr Palmer and Lee Comstock search Seminole Nation for new land sites while Green Great sells out and moves to Choctaw Nation. Mr Jess Condren recovers from illness and Blackburn has processed over 400 bales of cotton. Land rents are scarce as many seek to lease fields from neighbors.
Porterfield J T and DP M Watson announce a new general merchandise business in Francis and will open for business December 1st. The young men are described as capable and deserving, with a promising future in their venture.
Claude Chambless, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Chambless, died Thursday November 20 after a long illness. Local doctors and Dr Becca Saunders of Ft Worth failed to save him. Burial was at the city cemetery at 3 p.m. with Rev J W Collis conducting the service.
