4-H Honors Top Youths At Achievement Banquet
Carol Howell and Dewayne Coffey won the top 4-H awards at Pontotoc County’s Achievement Banquet held in the East Central State College Student Union. Howell, daughter of T. E. Howell, has eight years in 4-H with multiple prizes and roles, and will attend state club Congress in Oklahoma City in November 2024 as the county girl delegate. Coffey’s nine years in 4-H earned him the Hall of Fame honor amid a gathering of 4-H members, sponsors, leaders, and civic figures.

Landscape specialists advise Ada gardeners at Wintersmith meeting
Ada landscape amateurs and professionals heard advice from local and out-of-town experts at a one day conference in Wintersmith Fark Lodge. J C Garrett extension service landscape specialist led discussions on pruning spraying fertilizing and plant selection tied to Elm disease awareness. Seven counties Pon totoc Seminole Murray Potawatomi Garvin Lincoln and Payne sent representatives including parks service post office schools and nurseries.

Sturdy frontier home built in 1903 survives on hill east of Francis
The Francis area house, built by Harrison with massive stones and oak timbers, remains a sturdy relic of pre statehood era. Florita Harrison now lives there, tending a landmark that withstood time and modernization, while four of her children were born in the home before they grew up and left.

Ranchers See Rosy Future For Feedlots
Ada Farm and Ranch Club members toured area ranches near Fillstown to view progressive feedlot operations. Dr. G T Easley Dr Don Williams and G T Brown spoke at Turner Brown Ranch and later at Dowell Elton Stanford ranches and Everett Reeves feedlot. Attendees voiced approval of the feedlot economy and predicted more facilities would boost the market for fat cattle. County Agent Cy Haley noted many ranchers joined the tour and supported increased feedlot activity in the county.

No Turkey for Trapper as Coyote Foils Thanksgiving

Rocky Kinsey Returns With Rare Gems From Arizona Hills
Rock collector Rocky Kinsey, eight-year dealer in gems and minerals, returns to Pontotoc County from Arizona with two parts of his prized agate and Indian artifact collection. He plans to set up residence on the Bar-X Ranch near Jesse and open a dude ranch while continuing polishing rocks at a new shed on the ranch. Kinsey, who has traded with Navajo and Zuni artisans, will expand his fossil and mineral holdings as roads open to scenic spots on the property.
