In Chicago the Director of Railroads Walker D and seven regional directors pressed for a broad freight embargo to bolster the nation’s meager coal supply. If Director General Hines approves, a nationwide 7 percent cut in passenger trains and a shutdown of non essential industries could threaten 15 million workers.
Gary steel mills operated at near full capacity for the first time since a steel workers strike began weeks ago. Several hundred workers resumed duty yesterday as the twelfth blast furnace was brought online with a full complement of men.
Washington November 18 negotiations between bituminous coal miners and operators in central competitive fields remained at a standstill. Operators postponed a joint wage scale conference awaiting a completed counter proposal while weighing wage increases and the impact on mine control. Government department assurances were sought before replying to demands for higher wages and shorter hours. The potential for federal control of mines amid disapproval of higher coal prices drew close scrutiny from operators.

Three hundred Thirteenth Infantry soldiers and a band formed a guard of honor from the Penn Station area to the water, where boats awaited to ferry him to New York. Major General Shanks and Brigadier General Davidson welcomed him for the Army, while Admiral Glennon stood in for the Navy.
London dispatch quotes the Chronicle reflecting Premier Lloyd George as saying the league must proceed without America if needed. He notes Britain and France have not sought American commitments and denies sending representations to Washington about Versailles reservations. In Lisbon on October 20 the Portuguese gunboat fired 189 shells at the American coal laden steamer Milton built of concrete. The 3000 ton ship burned rapidly and began to heel over, disappearing from the Tagus after the gunboat destroyed it to prevent further fires. Thousands of Lisbon residents watched the dramatic sinking.
Paris the American delegation to the peace treaty will sail for home on December 25 and 26 aboard the transport American from Brest. The British delegation is expected to depart France about the same time, though no official announcement has been made.

He forced words and was released about twenty miles away as trains moved toward Minneapolis. Lundeen travels Minnesota Iowa and South Dakota decrying the league of nations as president of the American Club of Minnesota.
National War Work Council of the Y M C A earmarks 1 million dollars for 46,200 free scholarships for honorably discharged soldiers sailors and marines. Programs include 16,006 in Y M C A or accredited schools 30,000 in correspondence courses and 200 in higher education. Applications open nationwide via local Y M C A chapters.
