Agriculture Department reports July and August 1977 show fertilizer consumption down about 7.1 percent to 1.56 million tons from 1.68 million a year earlier. Nitrogen use dropped 15 percent, while phosphate and potash changed little.
The National Cattlemen's Association seeks new legislation to ease approval of a national beef promotion program under the Beef Research and Information Act. Current law requires two thirds support. move to a simple majority is proposed but may not reach action this year. If enacted, program funding would come from a three tenths of a percent cattle value levy.
The Agriculture Department reports world fish meal production dropped to four million metric tons in 1977 from 4.4 million in 1976, the smallest since 1973. Peru faces a 48 percent shortfall at about 440,000 tons vs 849,000 in 1976, with little recovery expected in 1978. Fish meal and soybean meal provide protein for livestock and poultry feeds.
Japan the top foreign market for U S soybeans and other farm goods signs an agricultural development pact with Brazil. Each nation will invest about 30 million dollars to develop soybeans corn and wheat in selected Cer rados areas of Minas Gerais. The Japanese Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives may buy outputs from Brazilian co operatives as crops are developed.
The FDA approves chorionic gonadotropin to treat frequent heat from cystic ovaries in cows but cautions against use for multiple ovulations and warns higher doses may lower pregnancy rates. Dean Stone earns the American Farmer Degree at the 50th National FFA Convention in Kansas City. he attends Oklahoma State University and is among about 1 percent of FFA members to receive the honor.
Oklahoma State University meat scientist Dr. Bob Henrickson says consumer demand favors leaner beef and that the industry should shift toward grass-fed animals. He notes about 40 percent of cassack beef goes to hamburgers, with supermarkets and big chains driving demand for ground meat and less fat in cuts.
The 36th annual Oklahoma Farm Bureau convention runs Nov 27 to Dec 1 in Oklahoma City with 1 000 delegates. Events include business sessions, policy votes, and tours of Farm Bureau buildings and a tire warehouse. Notable speakers include Dr. Denver Talley and Col Anthony Smith, with OSU president Dr Larry Boger headlining.
The program with $1.5 million for the year starting Oct 1 seeks projects that help farmers sell products directly to consumers. State agriculture departments and cooperative extension services are asked to submit bids or update last year's requests by December 9.
Senate and House committees advance Carter administration proposals on Farmers Home Administration loans raising loan ceilings to 200000 and 300000 for guaranteed loans and dropping total indebtedness limits. A 5 percent rate on initial 100000 with higher rates thereafter plus a 1 percent service charge. USDA flexibility to set rates for guaranteed and insured loans and exemptions for young and limited resources farmers.
The Agriculture Department raises the 1976 corn production estimate to a record 6.37 billion bushels, up 1 percent from October and above last year’s level. 1977 soybean output is put at a new high of over 1.68 billion bushels, up 2 percent from October.
