A lease pumper reports a novel method for gathering pecans using an up-ended derrick pipe. Bluejays repeatedly roost on the pipe and drop pecans when it’s raised, yielding about a gallon of nuts without climbing trees. Continued on page two.
U S farm egg prices for December 1960 are expected to average about 38 cents a dozen, about six cents above the 1959 period. Prices for January through March 1961 are projected to average 34 cents, roughly four cents higher than the same 1960 months.
An 1880s era Corner Saloon on the Chickasaw Nation side of the South Canadian River drew Indians and white cowhands. Emmit W. Wood recalls the saloon as a hub of drinking, fighting, and deadly benders, with Hooky Miller killing John Coleman during a shooting outside the bar.
Wood recalls Hooky Miller who mistook a man for his target at the Corner Saloon. Coleman was killed as Hooky hesitated after firing. Miller, though skilled, could not move after the fatal mistake and faced lingering trouble.
Sixty Pontotoc County senior 4-H members from eight clubs attended a recreation leadership training under Ray Parker assistant state 4-H club leader at the Ada Youth Center Thursday night. Parker noted strong progress and said the group will aid the January 1961 county wide Junior 4-H Party and local events.
The Ada Highway Department announces new speed limits on state routes. Broadway from Main to Ninth will be 25 mph, Ninth to Fourth 35 mph, and Fourth to the Oklahoma City Ada and Atoka crossing to State Highway 3 and 99 junction will be 45 mph. The changes take effect once speed signs are posted.
Ada Farm and Ranch Club schedules its regular monthly meeting for Thursday night November 17 at Pendergraft's Cafe Ada Dr Don Williams president says guest speaker will be Bill Horne CPA Ada Horne will discuss income tax problems facing area ranchers All area stock men and others interested are invited Members welcome to attend.
Pontotoc County hosts a pecan show on December 1 in Ada at the Herndon Building. A five member exhibit committee led by Dr. L W Cheek plans for 150 top pecan exhibits with cash awards for improved varieties natives black walnuts and pecan foods. Entries close December 1 with judging by E L Whitehead at 10 30 a m.
Latta School Superintendent J. J. Potter announced an open house at the new Latta School buildings on Monday night November 14 at 7 p.m. The event features tours of the high school shop and grade school, with refreshments in the home economics room and a come and go format for parents and teachers. A program is planned for the new gym once it is completed.
Charlie Shockley will serve as auctioneer at a pie supper in the Galey school building on Monday November 14 at 7 30 p m Proceeds support the Galey Christmas tree fund and the public is invited families and neighbors are urged to attend for a community event.
