New York article notes Memorial Day will soon mark the dwindling remnant of Civil War veterans. It recalls 1861 to 1865 battles, the vast Union and Confederate forces, and historians’ varying troop estimates for the South as time erodes living memory.
Ada marks Memorial Day with a 10 a.m. program at Rosedale cemetery honoring America's war dead. John Brett of Oklahoma City, a state criminal court of appeals member, will speak, followed by the dedication of the VFW building on East Tenth. Public invited.
East Central College grants degrees to the spring senior class in a formal ceremony. The event highlighted student achievements and featured faculty remarks about academic standards and future opportunities.
Dial Currin, Shawnee banker and state regents chair, addresses East Central State College spring graduates in Ada as 130 seniors receive degrees. He commends budget and building expansions over 11 years, highlights campus improvements including Linscheid Library and new education building, and honors late Dr. A Linscheid.
An all Indian platoon of 66 Marines is being recruited in Oklahoma as part of a U S Marine Corps move. Enlistees need not be full blooded Indians and an Indian Air gal from Ponca City will join after enlistment. Sgt Jerry McCleary at the local recruiting office seeks interested applicants with a June 16 target for the platoon. Leaders among local Indians back the effort to ensure full representation in the detachment.
President Truman vetoed the tideland bill that would grant title to oil rich lands beyond the coasts. He argued the lands belong to the public and would be given as a free gift to certain states. Congress would need a two thirds majority in both houses to override the veto, with an expected House override and a tight Senate vote.
The House approved a $1.276 billion highway bill sending it to the Senate. Oklahoma would gain a biennial $10.406 million for roadbuilding with state matching funds required to leverage federal money for highways.

Mrs. Bessie Rogers, 56, of 201 North Johnston, died in a local hospital after a crash in the 100 block North Broadway. Robin E. Deadman of Purcell drove a car that collided with a city street washer driven by William Condren. Deadman was held for investigation. Chief Cecil Smith noted this was Ada’s first highway death this year. Oklahoma’s highway fatalities rose to 191 from 202 a year ago.
Federal agents questioned two Nebraska hitchhikers James Ballantine and Lawrence Behney after their alleged abduction of a Texas salesman Donald McDougle and passenger. Oklahoma troopers captured them at a roadblock near Kiefer following the escape of a victim from El Paso. The pair faced FBI information under the Lindbergh act and were to be arraigned.
An explosion blew two gas meters in the alley behind the Ada News office and a regulator on a line to the News building blew out. Gas escaping from one meter ignited briefly but was extinguished by shutting off the gas. The Southwest Gas company will submit the incident to specialists for analysis.
Buffalo readers note a church caretaker sign on May 29 urging visitors to stay off the grass at St. Matthew's church as the keep-off-the-grass season begins. The playful message reads Go way I wanna be a lawn and captures local humor in a civic notice.
Paris authorities charged Jacques Duclos with carrying a gun during a bloody demonstration against Gen Ridgway and held him awaiting trial. Interior Minister Brune cited proof of an organized near conspiracy by Communist troops against the state amid clashes that left one dead and many injured. Police seized Red papers and mass arrests followed in Paris and other cities as demonstrations spread. Duclos wife and entourage were arrested. his wife released later.
In Koje Island Korea a U N guard accidentally fired an automatic rifle into Compound 66 at Prisoner of War Camp No 1 killing one Red and wounding another two hours after U N troops dispersed a demonstration. US British infantry entered the compound and tear gas was used to break up the riot.
A truck and semi trailer carrying 23 head of cattle overturned on a curve at the west edge of Roff about 1 30 am Thursday. Driver James W McCutchen Sweetwater Texas said brakes failed but left rear trailer brake caught and flipped the rig. Several cattle were injured but none died. convoy had five trucks moving cattle from Sweetwater to Missouri. Driver was shaken but uninjured.
Washington officials assess renewed large scale warfare in Korea as credible with China and North Korea mobilizing a million man force and stronger air power. Truce talks stalled over repatriation and captives survey. Western leaders fear Berlin and Germany tensions may pull forces from Korea, while Churchill calls Korea situation grave and Reds near a million strong.
Ten masked youths overpowered three students at the Cornell University radio station and aired a fake bulletin claiming European cities were bombed and an air armada was approaching North America. A university official called it a practical joke as the station flooded with calls.
The Senate approved a $6.7 billion foreign aid bill by 64 to 10 with 39 Democrats and 25 Republicans voting yes. Nine Republicans and one Democrat opposed. The measure moves to conference with the House which approved $6.163 billion for the coming fiscal year.
The Office of Price Stabilization authorized increases up to 25 percent in markups for hundreds of food items. The move, expected to raise public food costs by 100 to 150 million dollars annually, may not lift selling prices on all items.
The Atoka County Annual Fried Chicken Festival at Mamie Johnson Grade School drew 250 attendees. Bill Lowe and the Hereford Heaven Rodeo Band provided music as Clyde Cooper, Atoka Chamber of Commerce president, stressed county commerce gains and broiler production benefits. Earl Gray of Ada is charged with operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license. Filed Wednesday in peace justice court of C. W. Floyd. Gray was stopped Tuesday on Main Street in Ada by highway patrolman H. D. Van Arsdell while driving a 1948 Nash sedan.
Ada Chamber of Commerce membership drive for 1952 under Martin Clark has reached about $20,000 with new firms joining and larger contributions from existing members. Oscar L. Parker's team exceeded its quota and won baseball tickets, passing $7,000. Captains Harvey J. Lambert Foster McSwain and Charles Thompson report steady gains as the drive continues toward a $26,250 goal.
Anardarko Oklahoma fire raged six hours downtown yesterday causing about 450000 in damage to a three story furniture store warehouse rooming house and plumbing company. Firemen from Chickasha and Lawton aided tackling the blaze caused by defective electrical wiring. no occupants were inside.
