USDA reports nine months of fiscal year exports total 16.5 billion dollars, down 2.4 percent from 16.9 billion a year ago while volumes rose 17 percent. Wheat, feed grains, soybeans, cotton, rice, and tobacco show mixed gains and declines as prices shift.
Ada approves its Community Development plan with conditional HUD consent. No projects start until mid to late summer after housing assistance and environmental reviews are submitted, though admin funds may be used. Approval came via Rep Carl Albert and Sens Henry Bellman and Dewey Bartlett. The agency may seek council action to make the program a city department under Les Younger.
Beltsville Maryland tests a 1000 square foot solar collector panel atop a milking parlor to power 70 percent of heating needs and pre cool milk. The project aims to end fossil fuel use for space and hot water heating and cut milk refrigeration costs in half. Separate controls allow each solar collector set to operate independently.
Despite weather problems, cotton growers advance spring planting with 11.3 million acres expected, up 16 percent from 1975. USDA estimates 9.5 to 11.5 million bales possible depending on yields, with stockpiles forecast to fall to about 3.4 million by Aug 1.
Agriculture Department reports May 1 feedlot cattle in seven key states totaled 7.52 million, up 35 percent from a year ago but 10 percent below May 1974. Placements rose 17 percent from a year earlier to 1.62 million, with Arizona and other states showing sizable increases as producers expect higher grain-fed output.
The Agriculture Department notes rising mushroom prices, with fresh-market mushrooms at 62 to 64 cents a pound, up about 46 percent from a year earlier. Upland cotton prices average 50.2 cents per pound as exports dip to 3.5 million bales, while domestic mill use climbs to 7.3 million bales. Honey imports total 15.2 million pounds in Q1, helping blunt price rises amid declining domestic production. The ITC probes honey imports with a June 29 report to the White House expected.
