Reports from ten observers for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation say the May 15 open Squirrel season should be better than last year when poor mast production limited squirrel numbers Game supervisor Dale Curry notes a good mast crop last winter should help the population but another year of favorable food and habitat is needed for normal levels The Wildlife Conservation Commission kept daily bag and possession limits at six and twelve while opening dates remain May 15 to January 1 Legislative changes shifted bag limit authority to the commission and retained date control to the Legislature Hunters face rules on motor driven conveyances on fenced or cultivated lands and must seek landowner permission Mild timber harvest and plentiful mast in eastern and southeastern Oklahoma support the larger gray and fox squirrel populations with fox squirrels statewide and gray squirrels mainly in the east and southeast About one million squirrels are harvested annually in Oklahoma and last year data show 1963 levels around 538 41 with further hearings set May 21-30 in multiple counties to discuss bag limits and season lengths

Winter wheat crop should be record in 1974
Washington AP farmers are expected to harvest a record 1.612 billion bushels of winter wheat this year up 27 percent from 1973. The Crop Reporting Board's May 1 estimate shows 71 million acres planted, with drought concerns in west Texas easing as rains arrive. The 1974 crop outlook supports calls for increased production to meet rising domestic and foreign demand.

Local engineer named resident engineer for Purcell OHD
David F. Maloy, 31, selected as resident engineer for the Purcell residency of the Oklahoma Department of Highways by Director R. A. Ward. He previously served as area maintenance engineer at Division Three in Ada and was Ada Division computer systems coordinator. Maloy, born in Seminole, is married to Linda with two children, Zachary and Tara. He served three years active duty in the Naval Reserve and is commander of a Naval Reserve unit in McAlester.

Farm income outlook and grain crop prospects in 1974
Government forecasters say rising production costs will cut net farm income in 1974 to about 26.1 billion despite a projected rise in gross income. Output is expected to grow with record grain and livestock supplies, but higher expenses from fuel, fertilizer, and feed will push costs up by over 9 billion from last year.

Fitter explains SS deductibles rise at Ada office
Fidler, Ada social security office manager, said hospital charges driven by higher costs have raised Medicare deductibles under a coinsurance system. The inpatient first 60 days deductible rose to 84 dollars starting Jan. 1, with longer stays seeing daily charges up to 42 dollars by day 150. Coverage ends after day 150. the 60 day reserve remains.
