Lester Sheals and Aaron Richardson, Blytheville Ark., pleaded guilty in Judge J M Reeves court to robbing the Bank of Cooter on Nov 4 1933 and received ten year penitentiary terms. Dallas May 8 Sheriff W F Cato of Garza County was acquitted on a conspiracy to obstruct justice charge tied to the killing of federal narcotics agent Spencer Stafford. Co defendants Outlaw Braddock were acquitted by instructed verdict. trial for Cato and others on the murder charge set for May 20 in Lubbock.
Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma Tax Commission announce optional sales tax coupon books. H L McCracken says coupons will be voluntary and aim to reduce the tax burden. Books will include coupons from one quarter cent upward for shoppers paying taxes. Timing for issuance has not been announced.
Robert Shannon of the local NAS office announced the need for more bricklayers bulldozer operators reinforcing steel men and yard men to register with the National Reemployment Service. The office has linked employers with job seekers and rising Ada construction activity is creating demand for skilled labor.
More than 36 000 head of Pontotoc county cattle begin the second phase of a tuberculosis eradication program. Injections conducted earlier this week determine infection. cattle showing signs will be replaced or salvaged with federal funds covering the difference. Dr. Robinson leads the county effort, praised for improving cattle conditions and milk safety.
Mrs Grover Cleveland Bergdoll arrived seeking a pardon for her husband Grover Cleveland Bergdoll the World War draft dodger. She described his suffering and said he would resist prison and prefer a civil trial. The family plans to relocate to Philadelphia if clemency is not granted and stressed his bond with his aging mother.
Freddie and Clarence Busche, former Missouri convicts linked to multiple murders, were killed by Hanford E. Russell, a 40 year old farmer, after a brief woods confrontation near El Paso in White County. Russell fired three times ending the shootout that began when the Busches forced them from a stolen car and terrorized areas in Arkansas and Missouri.
Missouri Governor Guy B. Park granted Walter McGee a stay of execution until May 9 to study the case and review records. McGee abducted Miss Mary McElroy in 1933 and was the first kidnapper to face the U S death penalty.
Ada Fire Department filed a report with city commissioners showing 11 runs in April, 8090 feet of hose laid, total damage of $200, and a fire loss of less than 0.5 percent of the $48,900 value of affected buildings and contents. January and March had no significant losses.
In Baird Texas on May 2 M M Edwards sold about 75 cattle to W L Henry at a good price. Henry resold the herd to Edwards at a profit and Edwards sold again to Henry for further gain. Both say rising prices boosted their returns and each earned government money in the swaps.
Delegations from Alva urged removal and retention of O. E. Hatcher president Northwestern State Teachers College at the Oklahoma Capitol. Hatcher was there but did not meet the governor. State Superintendent John Vaughn said no board of education meeting had been called.
Frisco officials said the first general movement of Ozarks strawberries to market will start Friday with a carload shipment from Fayetteville Arkansas. Berry fields are in good condition but production this year will be only 25 to 30 percent of last year due to drought.
The Mid-Continent division of the North American Gasoline Tax conference will meet in Tulsa June 7. Tax commissioners and representatives from Louisiana Texas Arkansas Missouri Kansas New Mexico Colorado and Oklahoma will discuss gasoline tax enforcement.
STILLWELL May 7 Sheriff W A Nicholson posted bond of 2500 pounds to appear at the next district court term for manslaughter in the March 22 fatal shooting of Daily Alberty. At yesterday’s preliminary Nicholson pleaded self defense.
The United States holds cash, securities, mortgages, and real estate worth about $840,000 seized from Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, a Philadelphia draft dodger. The sequester was ordered under the Trading with the Enemy Act, which bars return of property to fugitives from justice.
Washington May 8 P The House Indian affairs committee favored an amendment to the Wheeler Howard act to require only 30 percent of registered voters on a reservation to cast a ballot for an election to be binding. A majority of the voting bloc would decide under the measure.
The Ada community approved extending the 10 mill levy for public schools by a large margin, with 140 votes for and 2 against. The extra levy, beyond the 5 mills allowed without a vote, has never failed in Ada, aided by active Parent-Teacher groups encouraging turnout.
Asher, about 21, an employee of Public Service Co of Oklahoma, was seriously burned this morning while cutting down a broken lightning arrester on a pole behind the Watts city hall. He was taken to a Westville physician after being sent to locate the source of radio interference.
Gen. Hugh S. Johnson denounced the anti inflation proposals of Huey Long, Father Coughlin and Dr Townsend in Mayfield urging the administration to repudiate their movements. He praised the U S chamber of commerce and condemned fiat money while warning it would erode savings and workers wages. The rally attracted about eight western Kentucky counties in a tobacco warehouse with a high school band and a 13 year old soloist introducing him.
Tommy Ward alleged leader of a forgery ring operating in Texas Oklahoma and Kansas pleaded guilty to passing a forged instrument in Big Spring and was sentenced to two years in prison. He will be tried in Odessa on July 8 for a similar offense.
C P F Dodge reports that April residential construction contracts in 37 eastern states totaled 42 million dollars, up from 22.6 million in the same month a year ago. The firm notes this as the month’s strongest showing since 1931, though it does not track states west of the Rockies.
Two Birmingham men were convicted on two counts of kidnaping under the Lindbergh law and each sentenced to 20 years. Joseph Buckner, 8, and Mathias Salasky, 27, held up Alfred E. Douglas of Catasauqua and Wilmer Allam of Hazletor, driving them into New York where they were released unharmed.
Andrew J. Harden an 80 year old resident of a log cabin on a ten acre oil tract near Ada asks the Oklahoma Supreme Court to restrain District Judge Harry L. S. Halley Tulsa County from acting on a petition by his divorced wife for a re settlement of property rights. He alleges that after Pontotoc county court took custody of the property the woman filed a dismissal then a new petition in Tulsa court following a visit by several men to his acreage.
