State agriculture officials announce Emergency Fuel for Farm Allocation forms from the Agriculture Department. Deputy Commissioner John W. Goodwin notes delivery cutbacks hurt farmers as monthly needs go unmet despite regulations. Dallas Federal Energy Office and Oklahoma Energy Dept pledge to route fuel to farm wholesalers for agricultural use. A separate case reports a misdemeanor for processing meat without a license after 2900 pounds of beef were found at a nonregistered plant.
Pontotoc County Conservation District aims for first place in the 28th Goodyear Conservation Awards Program. B M Stephens Stonewall chairman says the district will match its land user service record with other Oklahoma districts. An independent committee will pick two top districts. First place includes a plaque and expense aid, plus a vacation study trip for a cooperator and board member. Goodyear will host 53 first place district representatives on a tour to Marco Island, Florida in December. The district will also honor its outstanding cooperative for the year chosen from 1236 enrolled land users.
Oklahoma cattlemen say the feeder and feedlot sectors face losses nearing a billion dollars since September. High feed costs and below breakeven cattle prices shrink herd placements, risking later beef shortages even as wholesale beef prices fall. Demand lags and retail pricing may shift to attract buyers.
Washington AP reports rising U S beef exports to Japan may reach about 175000 metric tons in the year, with roughly 40000 tons from the United States. The Foreign Agriculture study notes growing Japanese demand, high retail prices in Japan, and a shift toward high marbling beef, while U S consumption stands at about 109 pounds per person.
State Senator George A. Miller of Ada has been reappointed to the Joint Legislative Ethics Committee. Senate President Pro Tempore James E. Hamilton announced the naming of three members to the special committee, with Roy A. Grantham of Ponca City and Donald F. Ferrell of Chandler also joining. Hamilton praised Miller for his reputation for personal integrity.
A home gardening guide urges rotating crops every two to three years and cautions on soil fumigation with poison gas.
