Oil fed flames swept a Sandia base guardhouse killing 14 military prisoners. Two inmates injured critically, two guards and six others overcome by smoke as investigators cite probable ignition from oil stoves and seek reasons for the blaze amid a wartime installation housing atomic bomb work.
Five men forced Sunnyside branch employees of Manufacturers Trust Co into the basement and escaped with 63933 dollars. The plan kept workers calm as 15 staff were moved to the basement and the vault opened. No one was harmed in the hour long operation.
The Signal Corps announced a single strand wire may carry a hundred television transmissions, expanding beyond urban areas. EL CENTRO Calif Mar 9 UP Parachute jumps to altitudes up to 80000 feet will be attempted this summer at White Sands New Mexico Proving Grounds by navy and air force parachutists. Lt Com J A Morrison said his parachute experimental unit demonstrated new chute releasing equipment yesterday. He noted fliers could survive above 60000 feet only in pressurized insulated capsules ejected from planes and lowered by large parachutes.

Representatives from the eastern and northern United States travel by plane on a Armour sponsored livestock and meat industry tour. They arrived in Ada at 11 a m Thursday after leaving Chicago Monday February 27. The group then toured Hereford ranches with Governor Roy J Turner and ranch manager Jim McClellan in attendance. The itinerary includes Albuquerque Ada Columbia and Chicago with stops in Denver Wendover Sacramento Turlock Bakersfield Santa Barbara and Tucson. Noted participants include Steffan Andrews J R Conant Channing Cope Walter Garver Norbert Hildebrand Everett Mitchell Marion Ramsay Lynn Robertson L B Skeffington Louis Zehner and others. The tour aims to inform eastern consumers about cat prices and supply and is organized by Armour and company.
Max Gilstrap, former Ada resident and now chief of the Chicago bureau for the Christian Science Monitor, is part of an Armour tour group. He grew up in Ada in the 100 block of West Fifteenth near the First Baptist tabernacle, with a sister Gladys who graduated from Ada High School. He later attended Oklahoma University, served with the National Park Service, and after WWII joined the Monitor in Boston before transferring to Chicago. He phoned his Oklahoma City-based mother before the group left for Gov. Turner’s ranch.
Harold Martin and Carl Lancaster were cleared of stealing a Great Dane and a Collie valued at 20,080 dollars. Six Angus steers from Pontotoc County earned a total of 180 in prize money at the Houston Livestock Show. A banquet at Stoneybroke Ranch near Fittstown honored five county youths who brought the calves. Participants included Tony and Bill Corbin, Barbara and Butch Wigley, and Jack Shipe. In light-weight Angus, Jack took second Barbara third Tony fourth Bill fifth and Butch sixth. In heavy Angus Tony finished third. The calves were divided into two groups of three for the entry. Animals sold for 50 to 75 cents per pound, and prize money was split at the banquet.
Jonathan W. Giles, Negro superintendent of Taft School for Negro deaf, blind and orphans, submitted his resignation to the state board. The board plans no immediate replacement and will wait until the end of the school year. Giles says the resignation is at the board’s convenience. No cause linked to the business manager. New York March 9 Judith Coplon was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to spy for the Soviet Union. Co-defendant Valentin A Gubitchev received a 15 year suspended sentence and deportation from the United Nations the two men facing additional penalties and potential fines. The judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently with another Washington case and refused bail. Coplon's attorney said an appeal would be filed.
Funeral services for Ed James will be held Friday at Dunn's Funeral Home chapel Sulphur with Dr Charles Myers officiating. James died Sunday in Stockton California where he had lived about a year and a half after previously living in Sulphur for two years. He was a driller who worked for Zepher Drilling and King Drilling and helped develop the Fittstown field. He is survived by his wife Lucile Gephart James.
