Government data show retail beef and pork prices climbing in May driven by higher farm prices for live cattle and hogs. The all-out beef price averaged over $1.38 per pound, up 4.4 cents from April, the highest since last December, with choice live steer prices at $41.43 per 100 pounds for May.
USDA surveys show 45 percent of households planned to plant a garden in 1977. Tomatoes dominated with 97 percent of plots. strawberries and apples were 21 and 17 percent. Key motives included better quality produce, lower costs, and gardening as hobby.
Oklahoma ASCS figures show 16 800 Oklahomans registered to vote in the Beef Referendum. Registration is closed and registrants may vote July 5 15 at county ASCS offices. Walter Wooley state chairman for the Beef Development Taskforce says to expect a large turnout and strong Yes for the BRIA act.
The Foreign Agricultural Service reports 1976-77 cotton exports from Argentina Brazil Colombia and Peru at 915000 bales. For 1977-78 the agency forecasts exports by these four nations could reach 1.2 million bales as they expand production.
Agriculture Secretary Bergland says the U S will not wage a price war on wheat despite a 14 year surplus and a likely huge world harvest He delays 1978 set aside plans until world crops and new farm legislation are clear and notes a decision by Aug 20 25 on the 1978 wheat program He expects a U S global grain plan for London talks by September and warns the price could remain a bargain for buyers worldwide

The Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association saluted two OSU horticulture staff members Dr. Herman A. Hinrichs and Dr. Glen Taylor for long service and notable contributions. Hinrichs received the 60th Year Service Award. Taylor earned the Extension Agent Award for his work with pecan production and outreach.
