Australian beef import hopes rise after quota lift
Washington reports indicate Australia may exceed its 600 million pound share of the U.S. beef import quota after Nixon removed the lid for 1972. A trade official says exporters will push to gain more of the U S market amid rising meat prices and easing restrictions. First four months of 1972 show stronger imports, with Australia supplying about 165 million pounds, up 40 percent from the prior year, as total shipments reach 2.483 billion pounds. The move could also lower farm gate cattle prices later this year.
