The winner of last week's Photo Contest was Louise Hatton of Fitzhugh who correctly identified the Ideal Cement quarry at Lawrence. Billy Marquard of Stratford also identified the photo. There will be no contest photos this week.
Washington AP reports the Johnson administration may seek a delay on the mandatory wheat referendum as farm legislation stalls in Congress. With the voluntary program expiring after this crop, prospects of a new wheat law before late summer fade, stirring opposition from groups like the American Farm Bureau. Meanwhile, Center Grade School petitions annexation with Pickett, predicting growth and a new building with added teachers as principal Dee Burdine departs for Harjo High School.
Oklahoma City AP A Claremore Republican attorney Robert E Lavender will be sworn in as the newest Oklahoma Supreme Court justice to fill the vacancy created by the ouster of N B Johnson. Governor Bellmon announced the appointment with Bar Association approval. Lavender will serve until the 1966 general election. Johnson was removed May 13 after Senate impeachment for bribery. Lavender is the second Bellmon appointee this year, joining Ralph Hodges named to replace Earl Welch who resigned amid federal tax evasion conviction and appeals.
Cy Hailey reports significant crop damage from grasshoppers in the county. Best control in June targets young hoppers in hatching beds with spray or dust along fence rows and ditch banks. If hatching occurs in grassy alfalfa, spray after the first hay cut using toxaphone 2 lb acre or malathion 1 lb acre or sevin 0.25 to 1 lb acre.
George L. Knapp of Tulsa was reappointed by Governor Bellman to an eight year term on the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission. He represents the first state district including Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Ottawa, Nowata, Rogers, Tulsa and Wagoner counties.
Pontotoc County Home Demonstration council met June 18 at Wintersmith Park with thirteen clubs present. Mrs. J E Martin led the meeting. reports on reunions and treasury were given by Mrs. Joe Engel in her absence. The group encouraged support for the Country Kitchen at the County Fair. A large picnic lunch followed featuring a mystery pie recipe, and plans for future events were announced.
Oklahoma City reports the Wildlife Conservation Department says ticks deter hunting fishing and land access in eastern forests more than land access issues in western areas. The agency studies tick control including cattle spraying on the Cherokee Game Management Area across 32 000 acres with monthly inspections and drag-tape tick counts across eight pastures and control sites.
Nematodes are harming county vegetable gardens with soil contamination reducing yields and quality. Root knots kill root systems in tomatoes peppers eggplant okra and vine crops. Rotation and soil fumigation help. trade products include Nemagon Fumazone W85 Gonfume and W40. Contact the County Agent for a mimeo leaflet.
The five state screw worm eradication plan aimed for 300000 dollars including Oklahoma. New reports show 620000 dollars contributed by cattlemen. Excess funds will support hot spotting of outbreaks in the Southwest and serve as matching funds with the USDA.
Mrs. Simon Patton recalls meeting Marl Dunlap who told of a near tragedy after he found a huge cottonmouth moccasin under a raised boat plank. Dunlap had loaned the vessel to friends for fishing on Lake Texhoma and planned a paint job but delayed the task.
Carl Doyne Isaacs of Wichita Kansas son of Mrs Florence Isaacs Ada has been promoted at Boeing Aircraft plant. He moves from research engineer to group supervisor of engineering systems in the computer center after earning a masters degree in math. He teaches night math classes at Kansas State while pursuing a physics masters.
