Cashing In With Cotton In Storage
Federal farm officials said southern farmers earned profits from 1 to 5 dollars a bale by withdrawing cotton stored under government loans and selling it to buyers short of supplies. With shortages lifting prices about 14 cents above loan rates, borrowers could settle loans and storage and still profit. About 200,000 bales have been removed from loan stocks recently as orders rise domestically and abroad. The situation shows the large government loan stock, totaling around 11,300,000 bales, remains a factor in market availability. In a separate note, the Senate agricultural committee approved a bill to underwrite 350 million dollars of private loans for arms purchases, to be administered by the Farm Security Administration, echoing federal support mechanisms used in home loans.
