A June 3 storm in Bryan county caused extensive damage around Durant including a church at Kenefick blown from its foundation and the Goodman school house demolished. Several farm buildings fell, but no deaths were reported though residents sheltered in cellars. Rain aided crops though southern areas saw little rainfall.
In Frankfort Kentucky on January 4 the State Prison Commission considered Youtsey's parole request. He is serving life for alleged participation in the Goebel assassination of Governor William Goebel in the Kentucky State House yard on February 3, 1900.
M C Wilson has been elected by the school board to fill the vacancy in the second ward caused by the resignation of C T Angel. The selection is praised as he is eminently qualified for the demanding position and Angel served two years with unsparing effort.
Health officer Dr D W Faust orders grocery, fruit, vegetable and meat dealers to cover goods with wire cloth to prevent fly contamination and warns of legal penalties. County health office also suggests placement of large fly traps in front of business premises.
The community mourns the death of Mrs. W. E. Stephens at Oakman. The 69 year old wife and mother died in her sleep after requesting a drink of water the night before. She leaves a devoted husband six sons and one daughter.
May 29 report from Washington says William Moore a negro ducked a brick dropped ten stories from a building and struck him on the head. The brick shattered but Moore recovered with no serious injury after physicians arrived. he questioned bystanders as if near death.
Judge Henry M. Furman of the Criminal Court of Appeals affirms the life sentence of Andy Scribner for murder. The ruling holds that the bill of rights protects the right to silence but does not bar testimony that may incriminate a person if invoked at the proper time and in good faith.
Judge Ralph H. Campbell ruled the Arkansas river bed between high water lines is state property under state control. The decision allows the state to issue oil and gas and sand and gravel leases without affecting navigation, denying Creek Nation ownership. The suit involved eleven producing wells and sought to claim river bed lease value.
E A Moody H D Lambert and W A Barrett reported in from Steed man today. Barrett said rain is not a current problem but several more hot days could desiccate areas enough to require relief.
Notice states the County Board of Equalization will meet June 16 1913 in the assessor's office at the court house in Ada Ohio to equalize taxes. Henry Kroth is chairman. Also mentions Mrs Mary Huddleston and Mrs Charley Ray returning from Stonewall today.
Ada and Alva representatives met in Oklahoma City to draft an initiated school bill aimed at abolishing some institutions and constitutionalizing the location of remaining schools. The measure would permanently locate the state university at Norman and the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Stillwater.
Washington reports the Senate Finance subcommittee voted to add livestock wheat and oats to the free list after reconsidering the prior decision to tax meats 10 percent. President Wilson and administration leaders pressed for free cattle and related grains, aligning with party policy. Senator Simmons sought the reversal after returning from a White House meeting.
Sherman Texas june 3 the Sherman city council accepted a petition to annex 1200 acres from South Montgomery street to Lake avenue and from East Central avenue to Elm street known as the Texas Nursery Company Addition. The move increases the city's corporate population by about 200 residents in this South Sherman area.
Senator Ashurst charged that J F McMurray of McAlester Oklahoma sought to influence Congress against the Gore amendment and contracts with Indians claiming McMurray could carry a bundle of eels upstairs without dropping one. He warned McMurray stands to gain 3500000 from the contracts and called him a smooth lobbyist amid broader anti Gore amendment activity. Separately John McKinney was stabbed at Bridges pool hall with Turner Berry jailed on bond pending hearing. McKinney healed after treatment and returned home near Sulphur.
Regular river service between Muskogee and Fort Smith has been re established by J J Harmon owner of the City of Muskogee. The boat will carry freight during the week and be used for Sunday excursions. A Muskogee Commercial Club trade extension trip will follow later in the week.
The Ada normal enrollment reached 504 this morning after unexpectedly large attendance. Additional instructors and more chairs were needed to accommodate students, signaling Ada may be first or second among Oklahoma normal schools. Some critics still oppose keeping the institution open.
Missouri Supreme Court discharges William R. Nelson owner of the Kansas City Star for contempt of Jackson county court. Nelson had been sentenced to one day in jail for publishing an alleged contemptuous article about Judge Guthrie. The court held the article contemptuous but freed Nelson due to Guthrie drafting his opinion the night before the contempt trial.
S M Diel, Maxwell resident, reports the Maxwell public school closed Friday after a successful eight month term. Miss Lillian Hassenfratz and Miss Mabel Adams taught, and parents expressed strong satisfaction with their work.
J W Barron attended W O W decoration day ceremonies in Konawa on Sunday, joining local residents in commemorations.
Marquette Michigan May 31 Col Theodore Roosevelt won his libel suit against George A Newitt who charged the Colonel with drunkenness. The jury awarded nominal damages of six cents and each side will pay its own expenses. Roosevelt waived any damage beyond the nominal amount.
Mexican rebels attacked Matamoros with Gen Blanco advancing on about 1 000 men. The garrison of 250 regulars and 200 volunteers held the town after heavy fighting. Sixty Federal soldiers crossed the Rio Grande and surrendered to U S troops. Casualty estimates range high with many rumors.
A Confederate dead monument for Montgomery County Maryland was unveiled in Rockville with solemn ceremonies. Addresses were given by Representatives J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama and J. Frank Clark of Florida.
Prefs W H Cox and J Frank Lilly of the Ada Normal faculty have been granted a leave of absence for a year.
In Tuscumbia Alabama on May 30 four trainmen were badly hurt and several passengers slightly injured when a westbound Southern Railroad passenger train collided with an eastbound Northern Alabama train. A number of Confederate Veterans aboard the Southern train returning from the Chattanooga reunion escaped major harm.
Fort Smith Ark June 2 In a floean case Attorney General Moose ruled Arkansas will become dry January 1 1914 unless courts decide otherwise He said the liquor bill passed by the last legislature cannot be referred to a statewide referendum despite petitions with 10000 signatures seeking a vote
Edgar Fenton of Lehigh Okla is named president of the State Federation of Labor with a lead of about 1008 votes over Pete Hanraty. Ollie S Wilson retains the secretary post by about 900 votes. Voted vice presidents include Sam Adkins Shawnee George Brady Coalgate John Kirk Coalgate and L T Core. Auditors and tellers chosen include D N Ferguson Ardmore and Alix case miner.
