Big crops despite drought and blight hits 1971 outlook

AP farm report shows corn plantings at 64.4 million acres for grain harvest, up 12 percent from 1970, with total corn including silage at 74.7 million acres. Wheat harvest estimated at 1.55 billion bushels, near record, despite drought denting winter wheat yields in Oklahoma and Texas. Kansas posts record 308 million bushels. Overall cropland planted totals 314 million acres, the highest since 1967.

House negotiators push no-deadline draft counterproposal

House negotiators offered a no-deadline substitute to the Indochina war pullout language but show little hope for an early break in Congress deadlock over the draft. Hebert refuses to disclose the counterproposal noting it excludes the Senate nine month troop withdrawal deadline. Hebert says the conferees will not bind the President and further talks on a two year extension are not yet scheduled.

Young Tulsans to Perform at East Central

The Young Tulsans, an outstanding group of young musicians, will be heard in concert tonight at East Central Mall. The 80 piece band performs at p.m. with no charge. The program should last about one hour and includes a wide range of band literature.

Tulsa judge orders integration of four Tulsa elementary schools

Federal Judge Fred Daugherty ruled the Tulsa Board of Education must devise plans to end de jure segregation in four elementary schools within a reasonable period. He exempted five other Tulsa schools, noting demographic shifts created predominantly black enrollments due to housing patterns. The plan includes faculty integration and other steps as part of the court order.

Missing boy found after 10 day search

Kevin Dye a 10 year old youth with mental disability was found alive on Casper Mountain after a 10 day disappearance. He was located near the base rescue camp on the 6110 foot mountain and reported to be in fairly good physical condition by officials. The incident ends a lengthy search and brings relief to Casper residents.

Corn blight not as severe as thought

Associated Press reports plant pathologists say southern cord leaf blight has been light this year across the Corn Belt. Dry weather and slower spread reduce economic damage, with officials noting infections in several states but overall outlook says a fairly good crop is likely if dry conditions continue.
