Set-Aside Wheat Acreage Set To Grow In 1972 Plan
The Agriculture Department expects 1973 wheat acreage set asides to rise to about 25 million acres from 20 million for 1972. Ten million acres will be pursued via voluntary agreements with farmers who may set aside up to 150 percent of their allotment and receive 8 cents per bushel. Officials say the plan is not to be modified later, while some farmers doubt the 10 million acre voluntary target will attract enough extra production amid a bumper 1.53 billion bushel harvest and tentative export demand from the Soviet Union.
