Fall Web Worms Threaten County Pecan Trees

A county blight hits pecan and walnut trees with fall web worms. Mid May onward, webs enclose two to three feet of leaf clusters, masking damage until branches die. County Agent Cy Hailey notes high infestations in Pontotoc County, especially on pecans and walnuts. control via pruning and burning affected parts or DDT.

Young Oklahoma boy builds own car from odds

Gary Lee Simpson, 12, of Byng, with help from his father Lee Simpson, assembled a six foot long, three foot high aluminum bodied vehicle dubbed Silver Streak. Using scooter wheels and ice box trays, the car runs on a three horsepower chain driven motor. Gary, a Byng School eighth grader, says the project kept him busy during his recovery from rheumatic heart treatments and teaches practical mechanics while keeping him out of trouble.

Rankin and Bottoms Train Cow Horses at Galey Center

Ed Bottoms and Rankin operate a horse training development at Galey northwest of Ada on SH 13, with 19 horses in training. Bottoms, a veteran roper, handles riding while Rankin, a famed horseman, guides early work, stressing building a colt’s confidence and trust.

Farm Club Sets Meet Thursday

The Ada Farm and Ranch Club will host EF Daugherty from Oklahoma State University July 20 at 7 p.m. at Sheep Creek Ranch to talk about livestock and feed grain legislation. Daugherty holds a B S in animal husbandry and an M S in agricultural economics.
