The Associated Press reports a 5 p.m. deadline set for Western Cartridge Co. to accept or reject a mediation board recommendation to recognize the AFL Chemical Workers union for about 550 smokeless powder workers at the Alton plant, amid a broader defense labor dispute. The plant employs 6,500, and the issue hinges on bargaining representation while an NLRB order is appealed. Nearby, 1,500 AFL construction workers abstained from a $4 million Jefferson Barracks project in a WPA wage test.
Oklahoma City July 2 nine Oklahoma WPA executives faced dismissal over alleged ticket sales for the Jackson Day banquet. The truck driver, Jet Tucker, 46, Broken Bow, claimed he was at the wheel. Kennedy, 29, Broken Bow, had earlier said he drove the truck but records show otherwise. Ten thousand twelve feet of pine lumber strewn along street and right of way. traffic tied up. Engineer Amos Armstrong, 60, Denison, suffered a broken arm.
