Britain's new night fighters were reported in action against German raiders over London Wednesday night and early today as the German planes raided the capital for the first time since Sunday night. The rattle of machine guns was heard, suggesting interceptions amid clearing weather.
A two day strike at Eaton Manufacturing’s five plants ended after federal conciliators mediated, while Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego remained deadlocked over wages with CIO United Auto Workers and threatened arbitration. The disruption could halt 11.4 million dollars in military plane orders. Greek forces reported retaking heights in Albania after surprise attacks amid heavy snowfall. The British carrier Illustrious sustained damage from German dive bombers but reached port under its own power, with further German claims of direct hits. In Montevideo the French freighter Mendoza attempted to sail four times with food for blockaded France, thwarted each time by the British cruiser Asturias.

Washington Jan 15 The Navy asks Congress to approve 400 small ships including sub chasers mine sweepers and torpedo boats with 310.46 million for construction and 25 billion for building expansion 280 vessels deemed urgently needed mostly on the Great Lakes 165 foot seagoing sub chasers 110 foot wooden sub chasers motor torpedo boats and various mine sweepers. Also endorsed was a 300 million strengthening of anti aircraft power.
Secretary Morgenthau presented three figures for Britain's dollar position and asked for a fourth estimate from the war and navy departments. He cited A $1 775 000 000 total dollar assets as of January 1 and a calendar year receipts estimate of $1 555 000 000 along with $3 019 000 000 in contracted expenditures for the year. He noted a missing fourth figure representing expected purchases in 1941 beyond current orders.
A speaker warns that people can cover past purchases in dollars but lack funds for future needs. His final warning is delivered in a somber, ominous tone as the sentence ends.

Dewey, UAW CIO president R J Thomas, and Eaton Wilcox-Rich division reps will join discussions. About 250 CIO workers could return gradually. over 25 had already gone back to work.
