Move to Keep OEA Figure In Bill Averted
Oklahoma City February 27. A move by school bloc members to block the senate education committee from reducing the 26.5 million dollar school aid bill was averted as committee men agreed to delay action. Sen. Virgil Medlock moved to drop the house finance bill and push a senate version with the same total. The senate version has reported favorably and awaits action. Medlock withdrew after chairman Louis Ritzhaupt noted the finance bill hearing was set and many members were absent. The committee deferred action on the DEA bill to vitalize the free textbook amendment. Governors Turner and leaders say funds are insufficient to appropriate the estimated 1.506 to 2.5 million for machinery. Nevins warned action is needed or some sponsors will not be here to discuss later. Rogers said people expect free textbooks. Wheeler warned vitalizing the amendment would scrap the single adoption system for a multi adoption system. Action remains delayed until budget totals are clearer at session end.
