Byars Grass Fire Destroys Barns In Wide Northeast Sweep
A massive grass fire near Byars scorched 10 square miles of dry pasture starting at Byars High School around 1 p.m. and was not controlled until about 10 p.m. Firefighters from six communities battled the blaze, with more than 100 volunteers involved. Three barns burned as winds over 20 mph fanned the flames, but no homes were seriously burned. Firefighters reported a Stratford official was briefly scorched and a man described the fire as the year’s largest. The fire jumped highways near Byars before winds shifted and slowed the advance late evening.

Oklahoma State Broiler Show Set for May in Muskogee
The 19th Annual Oklahoma State Broiler Show will be May 6 at the Muskogee fairgrounds. Entry closes April 3. Open to Oklahoma juniors ages 9 to 19 from 4-H FFA and independents with two classes. Premiums total near 1000 dollars. Birds must be hatched after March 3 from a recognized commercial broiler stock. Exhibits due by 9 am and released at 1:30 pm.

Winter Wheat Crop In Critical Condition
The 1976 winter wheat crop was in critical condition by mid February in drought stricken Great Plains areas and beyond salvage in some places. In Texas Oklahoma Kansas and Colorado conditions remained critical with dry top soils and severe wind erosion noted. Irrigated wheat in Texas showed good growth by Feb 15 while dryland stands were dying and some fields unrecoverable. Officials will release a new production estimate May 10.

Annual Pon totoc County Livestock Show ends with top premiums
Two Vanessa FFA members saw steers win the top premium bids at the eighth annual Pon totoc County Junior Livestock Show sale. Steve Miller’s crossbred steer earned the high bid of 375 dollars with total earnings reaching 917.25 dollars, while Gary Gibson’s steer drew 235 dollars and 851.58 dollars in total premiums. Breeders Holland Brothers and W. W. Gibson were cited, and show sponsor B J Robertson noted 30 steers sold for 11,466.50 dollars in premiums as two Latta 44H members led the swine division with grand and reserve hog titles. Grand and reserve champions will be announced March 6 after slaughter and carcass evaluation.

A fire at Pickett Tuesday afternoon destroyed three sheds housing prize pigs and litters. Joe Lancaster discovered the blaze about 4 45 p m as he returned from the Junior Livestock Show and with help from several men prevented it from spreading.
