Meat supplies beat estimates for 1977 outlook

The Agriculture Department says meat supplies will be larger than earlier projections, keeping cattle prices lower through mid year. Choice steer prices in Omaha are seen at 37 to 39 dollars per hundredweight this quarter and 39 to 41 next quarter. Pork may rise 20 percent in H1 1977, offsetting beef cuts as total red meat output climbs 4 to 6 percent from 1976. The severe winter also damaged honey bee colonies, hampering pollination and hive checks across many states.

Farmers eyeing foreign markets for 1977 crop decisions

Agriculture officials say farmers will closely watch world demand and prices to decide how much corn soybeans and cotton to plant this spring. Early surveys show intent to plant more corn about six percent more soybeans and ten percent more cotton.

Municipal Elections Set in Allen Byng Francis Roff and Stonewall

Filing opens Feb 28 for city offices in five towns. Voters in Allen Byng Francis Roff and Stonewall will choose four year trustees for wards 2 and 4 on April 5 and Francis voters will select a trustee for ward 3 to complete an unexpired term ending in 1979. Town treasurers also elected. Filing ends March 2 at 5 pm with a $5 cash fee returned to candidates receiving at least 15 percent of votes. Election board hours are 8 am to noon and 1 to 5 pm weekdays. All legally registered voters in each town may vote.

Turner Falls Bill Introduced in Oklahoma Legislature

State Sen. Ernest Martin introduced SB 215 to allocate 1.5 million dollars to the Tourism and Recreation Department for the purchase and improvement of Turner Falls in Davis as a state park. Davis residents would vote on any sale, with ongoing talks between state and city officials.

Fertilizer Industry Struggles With Gas Shortage Pinch

The natural gas supply squeeze hits fertilizer makers as ammonia output drops. Edwin M. Wheeler of the Fertilizer Institute cites a 73 000 ton cut in a Jan 16 22 week versus a 4 307 ton fall last year. He warns spring delivery problems persist despite adequate winter inventories and urges gas price deregulation. Washington AP. Broiler industry coping with winter strains improving

The National Broiler Council reports producers are coping with severe cold and fuel shortages. Costs rose. some birds died in transport and venting was hindered by freezing. While most deliveries continue and few marketing problems arise, snow closures reduced some retail orders. Feed supplies now worry industry officials as transportation remains irregular.

Winter wheat crop needs rain across major producing states

A weekly weather review notes the 1977 winter wheat crop was in fair to good condition as of December 26, with moisture and snow cover benefited by upcoming rain. Kansas remains short of moisture. loss of snow cover worsens erosion risk, and officials expect soil moisture to improve with more precipitation.

Ninth Annual Junior Livestock Show Opens at Fairgrounds

About 200 county 4 H and FFA members enter their best livestock in the Ninth Annual Junior Livestock Show at the Pontotoc County Fairgrounds. Weighing and tagging of swine run Sunday 1 5 p m, with check in by 6 p m. The event continues through Tuesday with steers and swine judging and a premium sale of top animals. Open to the public with no admission charge.

Siren Test Scheduled For Friday

City warns of a Friday siren test at 10:00 am to run five cycles for about six minutes. If a storm watch is in effect the test is cancelled. Civil Defense director Landrith invites reports of inaudible sirens and notes Ada will conduct a manual test during tornado season.
