A beef producer compares two bulls A and B with weaning weights of 450 and 550 pounds. Assuming 30 cows, 90 percent calf crop, 108 calves in four years, and a 50 pound per calf advantage from Bull B, the weight gain yields 35 400 pounds more meat and $1 080 extra income at 20 cents per pound.
The Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association planned its annual meeting in Oklahoma City at the Skirvin Hotel on Friday Feb 3. The board and committees, with delegates from across the state, would draft recommendations for the general session. Discussions include brucellosis or Bangs disease control, seed tax, soil bank, packing plant inspections, and cattle theft control. Alex Dreier will speak at the dinner on Where Do We Go From Here. The convention ends with a cattlemen's party at 9 p.m. Friday.
Wayne Truitt of Stonewall was elected president of Pontotoc County 4 H Federation Saturday January 28 in Ada district courtroom. The meeting adopted goals for 1956 urging full club enrollment and complete records, with a 1956 event schedule including training schools, meat and land judging contests, Share-The-Fun festival, dress revue, roundups, and the county fair set for September.
Grass seed conference on the Oklahoma A&M campus February 14 covers soil bank effects on production and distribution. The session opens 1 30 p m in the student union varsity room and dovetails with the Crops Soils and Fertilizer conference February 15 16.
A damp spell brings nearly an inch of rain over two days, aiding runoff and stock water while saturating roads and easing drought worries. Fog, changing skies, and scattered showers marked the week as residents welcomed moisture in various forms.
Harral Allen of Ada was elected president of the Oklahoma Association of Soil Conservation Districts at a meeting in Oklahoma City. Lowell Caskey of Stratford and Laverne Fisher of Coalgate joined the executive committee. Allen, a Pontotoc County supervisor, leads the Sandy Creek district and will attend the national convention in Boston February 6–10.
Frisco resident W. R. Robbins raises 200 acres of hogs and crops on his farm and operates a on site market selling dressed hogs or halves directly to customers. He uses crop rents as part of his feed shares and notes better prices than selling off the hoof. He has ready buyers locally and runs his operation as a full Farm to Table market.
University of Minnesota researchers Dr. William E. Peterson and Dr. Berry Campbell announce the potential for milk containing disease fighting antibodies. They caution that much work remains before human use, though vaccines injected into cows produced antibody rich milk. The short term use is seen in veterinary medicine to immunize cattle against diseases like bangs or other bovine ailments.
Oklahoma A M entomologist Newton Flora warns grasshoppers could swarm Oklahoma in 1956, possibly triple last year’s numbers and threaten ranges and crops. The Agriculture Department predicts possible complete destruction, but heavy April rains could wipe out the young hoppers.
The Vanoss vocational agricultural department will sponsor a farmers meeting on Wednesday February 8 at 730 p.m. in the Agriculture Building. Speakers include N L Hensley vo ag instructor conservation film shown and discussion on the Sandy Creek watershed project. Classes on soil conservation to be organized with schedules announced. All farmers and others interested invited. Also note high efficiency broiler feed can hold barley up to 25 percent of total grain per OSU researchers.
The Coal County Breeders Association announces the eleventh Hereford and fifth Angus annual sales next week at the Coalgate community building. Hereford sale Thursday February 9 starts at 1 p.m. featuring 12 Polled Hereford bulls and 15 horned whitefaces. Angus sale Saturday February 11 lists 27 bulls. KR M Lacy, association president, noted both events begin at 1 p.m. and mark major sales years.
Tony Valinoti of Seffner Florida trained a steer by using hamburgers as rewards. The steer famously grabbed and ate Tony’s hamburger during training, then performed well enough to enter it in the Florida State Fair, showcasing a novel incentive system for beef cattle training.
