Charles Molony reports new Commerce Department figures show Americans spent a record 127 billion dollars on goods and services in 1946, up 21 billion from 1945. Non durable goods total 77 billion, durables 14 billion, services 37.5 billion. Prices rose about 10 percent from 1945 and 40 percent from 1941.
President Truman visiting Independence for Christmas stopped at a dime store soda fountain. He joined Mayor Roger Sermon and a morning coffee club, sharing a soft drink with clerks and local residents as reporters trailed the stroll through town. The scene drew a curious crowd as the president walked a two mile loop with local figures.
Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma urged Congress to consider adjusting rent controls if continued by the next session. Sam H Kite escaped serious harm after his car plunged from a bridge into the North Canadian River north of Seminole while en route from Tulsa to visit his parents. In Abilene Kansas a fire in the Lamer hotel lobby started when a woman touched a match to a cotton covered Christmas tree limb on Christmas Eve. The blaze spread quickly. the woman fainted and the fire was put out with chemicals before damaging furniture or spreading. The rug was scorched and the ceiling marked while fixtures were sprayed.
