World fats oils rise to lift competition for U.S. soy farmers

Agriculture analyst Alan E. Holz says world production of vegetable fats and oils will grow about 6 percent to 48.6 million metric tons next year, boosting foreign supply. U.S. exports of soybeans and related products may rise slightly while farmers face pressure from palm oil and other global producers. Prices for soybeans have fallen from recent peaks, with U.S. farm prices averaging about 4.45 a bushel by mid November.

Farm Land Inventory Aims to Map U S Prime Areas by 1980

The Agriculture Department launches a national inventory to map prime and unique farm land in 3000 counties led by the Soil Conservation Service. The project will test procedures in 100 counties this year and seek to inform local planners about land being converted to cities and highways while preserving agricultural areas.

Beef import quota to be raised soon

Agriculture Department officials say beef imports under the 1964 quota law will rise about 4.2 percent next year. Agreements with Australia and New Zealand will set the new allocations, with Canada-U.S. beef quotas gradually dissolving after talks with Secretary Earl L. Butz.

Soviets claim parity with U S in production trade talks

A Soviet trade official told a Kansas City seminar that the USSR now matches the United States in many productive fields and could trade far more if not for U S trade barriers. The discussion touched on the grain agreement, agriculture exports, and 1974 75 policy issues shaping bilateral trade.
