Farmers' debt and assets reach new peaks by 1977

By Jan 1 1977 farm debt is seen at a record 101.5 billion up 12.1 percent from 1976 while farm assets climb to a record 634 billion up 8.3 percent. The debt to asset ratio edges up to about 16 percent as higher land values boost asset totals and financing. Projections for 1978 foresee debt near 112.6 billion with assets around 679.3 billion.

Oil Pioneers to be Honored in Oklahoma City Monument

Oklahoma oil pioneers will be honored with an eight foot granite monument unveiled December 2 at the Historical Building in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Petroleum Council co sponsor the ceremony with Gov. David Boren and state officials present. The bicentennial marker highlights early oil men and their impact on Oklahoma’s economy.

Scabies Outbreaks Rise In Several States

About one third more new scabies cases were reported last month than in November 1975 with outbreaks in New Mexico Oklahoma Colorado Kansas and Texas. Cattle quarantines are used where infestations occur until pesticides kill the mites. Dairy price support purchases rise as butter cheese and nonfat dry milk are contracted by the Commodity Credit Corp.

Fertilizer Use to Rise Says Agriculture Dept Figures

The Agriculture Department reports fertilizer use may rise sharply next year with about 16 percent more fertilizer consumed in the first quarter of the 1976 77 year than a year earlier. Prices have fallen from recent highs and the trend affects crops like winter wheat and spring plantings.

Biological control offers hope against alfalfa weevil

USDA ARS scientists report that releasing 12 of 13 imported parasites has reduced chemical pesticide needs in the eastern United States. Six parasite species now dominate weevil control from New Jersey to New England, saving farmers about 7 million dollars annually in that region.
