Debaters from six states arrived in Ada to compete in the East Central tournament. Action began at noon with contests set to start at 2 pm. Many students were due Friday but some reached Ada Thursday for early events serving as instruction for later contests.
Thomas F. Pierce, early Oklahoma county superintendent and state education figure, visited Ada to finalize districting and bond actions. He recalled building 62 new schools in Ponca City County era and detailed his diverse career from Roff to Norman and Oklahoma City.
Paul Sellers is charged with burglary in the second degree in Percy Armstrong justice court. A deputy sheriff filed a complaint alleging he broke into Elwood Kingsley's house on South Mississippi and stole goods valued at $125. Four witnesses were subpoened by the state.
Governor Ernest Gruening declared Alaska ready for statehood, highlighting its 90 000 population and vast untapped resources. He cited strategic defense value, Air routes, the St Lawrence Island encounter before Pearl Harbor, the Alcan highway, and plans for a parallel inland highway.
Reckless driving charges were filed Wednesday against Earl Loyd Sutton and Roy Loyle Winters in justice courts. Both were arrested and ordered to appear in court by Highway Patrolman O. O Campbell. Muskogee firm yran Buckner and Lyles handles a 6 1/2 mile stretch from SH 13 and SH 19 west of Ada while Standard Paving Company of Tulsa owns the next six miles and final four miles toward SH 18. Weather helps progress. supply delays and railroad embargo threaten pace.
Oakland and union leaders reached a deal ending a three day general strike that disrupted East Bay services for about 1,000,000 residents. Police will not be used to break picket lines and officials will remain neutral in labor disputes. Remaining protests center on Kahn and Hastings Retail stores pending broader contract talks.
Oklahoma tax commission announces two new tag agents in Grady county. J. B. Davis of Minco replaces Claude Slover, and Mrs. Harriett Neill of Chickasha replaces Mrs. Hazel Goff. G. B. Worsham remains agent at Rush Springs.

McALESTER Okla Dec 5 A district court jury found Aubrey Earl Smith guilty of first degree manslaughter in the slaying of Mrs Lottie Mae Blevins and set his punishment at four years in the state penitentiary The verdict was returned last night in a trial that began Monday before Judge R W Higgins Smith was charged with murder in the slaying on June 10 west of McAlester on U S highway 270 Bond was set at 8000 Smith 25 also faces an accusation in the slaying of Clarence Cravens fatally wounded June 10 but that case will be heard at the next term
A Columbia high school senior Jim Spell, 17, was named 1946 champion in the National Junior Vegetable Growers Association production and marketing contest. He won a $500 award at the opening session of the 12th annual convention for an acre project worth 0.74 in vegetables. Regional champions earning $200 scholarships included Marjorie Ann Ball of Yukon Oklahoma.
John D Small resigned as Civilian production administrator with the claim that higher production would follow after labor management problems are resolved. President Truman praised near full employment and peak production reached in peacetime, noting Small should return to private industry.
E. O. Fisher state Veterans Employment Representative urged all employers to survey openings first for disabled veterans then for able veterans before Ada Chamber of Commerce. He defended the VA and said the 52-20 club is partly civilian fault. Grady Stephens said he would press local firms to sign agreements to hire vets with aptitudes and experience.
