U S Department figures show the average price of a one pound loaf of white bread near 35.5 cents through the first nine months of 1976 with September at 35.7 cents. Experts expect further increases as costs rise following higher wheat prices and strong harvests.
Reuben Chandler, a farmer rancher and retired Air Force officer, was elected at the Nov 14 board meeting to lead Pontotoc County Farm Bureau. He succeeds outgoing president Larry Heard and aims to better inform members and aid farmers in legislative matters. Chandler runs a 472 acre ranch near Francis with 100 cultivated acres and is married to Mary.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association reports that rural co-ops serving about 25 million consumers charge 12 to 16 percent more than the broader utility industry. The finding comes from what officials call the most comprehensive survey ever done, published in RE Magazine.
Assistant Secretary Carol Tucker Foreman announced public input on proposed rules to require states to identify schools in need of the breakfast program and outline actions to boost participation. The program began as a 1966 pilot serving 80,000. permanent since 1975. this year 2.5 million children in 21,032 schools use it, versus 25 million lunch eaters in around 90,000 schools.
Officials announce three sessions on integrated pest management to be held December 13 to 15 in Kansas City Missouri February 28 to March 3 in Gainesville Florida and March 7 to 9 in Reno Nevada conducted by federal state cooperative extension services. The meetings target entomologists plant pathologists nematologists economists and farm management and consider cultural methods pest vulnerabilities resistant crops biological controls and pesticides to reduce chemical usage.
A state entomologist explains how to tell flying ants from termites swarming near homes. Look for wings: termites have equal-length wings twice body length, while ants have longer front wings and longer overall relative to body.
Washington AP report notes retail beef prices jumped to about 1.42 per pound in October, the highest since May 1976, with continued upticks likely through November. Pork prices fell as hog slaughter rose, while overall red meat production declined year over year. Veal lamb and mutton also dropped.
Oklahoma State University animal scientist Dr. Don Wagner outlines wheat rations as financially rewarding when used with safeguards. He notes wheat’s higher density and protein value, its digestibility, and the need for careful processing and regular feeding to avoid acidosis while using 30 to 50 percent or up to 80 percent wheat in mixes with adequate roughage and buffers.
Agriculture Department analysts project farm debt to total $118.7 billion by year start, up from $102.7 billion at the start of 1977. John E. Lee Jr. of the Economic Research Service noted a $16 billion rise will be recorded, remarks made at the annual food and agricultural conference.
