Maxwell’s History by Mrs George Carter
Maxwell once thrived with seven stores a post office and church before 1902. It grew around Norman and Fleming's store and Summers Chapel built by Summers families. The town featured doctors a lawyer Judge Fleming and a last school built of red brick before consolidation with Vanoss. Freight came from Byars Wynnewood and Ada formed along the river fording at Youngblood Crossing. Residents recall peddlers, tobacco tags, 4 H clubs, plays and Sunday church life, ending with fond memories of a peaceful old home town.

All residents may obtain answers on the operation and interpretation of the presidential order of Aug 15 on prices rents wages and salaries from the Pontotoc County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service ASCS office. Gene Maley chairman says county ASCS offices nationwide serve as information centers to answer questions from all citizens on President Nixon s order.

Bids will be opened at 1 p.m. in Stillwater for sites on Sandy Creek. Site 19 lies west of Garr Corner on lands of Whitey William, H. P. Gallup and Ava Cummins with an estimated cost of 64,448 dollars. Site 21 near Garr Corner belongs to M. C. Cox and the State of Oklahoma with a 27,884 dollar estimate. Home Building Rises After 10-Year Slump
New York reports show a rebound in single family housing starts after a decade of decline. In 1960 single family homes accounted for 79% of new construction, dropping to 53% in 1969, rising to 55% in 1970, with July 1971 at a strong annual rate. Ada Teachers Face Pay Freeze Under National Controls
Ada schools and Hast Central State College report no teacher salary increases while national wage and price controls stay in place. Budgets earmark increments for later distribution, with custodians and other workers receiving July raises while new hires and rent adjustments await lifted controls.
