Farmers see shift from owner to tenant tenure in 1920 census
Washington August 15 The Bureau of the Census releases preliminary 1920 agriculture figures with 445,966 farms listed. Of these 8,925,095 were owned or operated by owners, managers, or tenants. Owners operated 6 percent of farms, managers 1.1 percent, and tenants 1 percent. The data show a decade of decline in owner operation and a rise in tenant farming, with notable regional variations. The report distinguishes full owners from part owners and notes changes in farm operator categories through 1910 1918 and 1920. Analyzed alongside manager operated farms, the census highlights shifts in farm tenure and regional patterns.
