Genetic vulnerability risk to crops in uniform varieties
The National Research Council warns that uniform crop varieties raise systemic risks to the food supply. A 1970 corn epidemic from southern leaf blight illustrated how sameness invites widespread losses. similar uniformity now extends to sorghum, millet, sugar beets, onions, cotton, cantaloupes, and possibly wheat, amid calls for a diversified approach and improved monitoring under set aside programs. Government payment rules push set-aside land, affecting deductions and productivity, while wheat price increases boost grain loans and influence farmers to sell rather than use price support loans.

Democrats split, McGovern condemned the veto, Kennedy criticized priorities, while Mahon urged restraint as the bill’s funds would raise spending and taxes.
