Southeastern Oklahoma hosts the fourth annual rodeo at Ada fairgrounds starting Thursday night. Cowboys perform riding roping and bulldogging events with shows on Friday night, Saturday 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday 2 pm. Ada Firemen sponsor expect bigger, better entertainment than last year with ample free parking and a grandstand cover for comfort.
Tulsa investigators ordered an autopsy into Slayton Powell's death in the city jail third cell. Powell, 40, was found bruised with blood about the head, likely died about 40 minutes before discovery. He had been sentenced to 13 days for liquor violation and was declared insane by Dr. James H. Neal.
EL RENO August 10 funeral services for Mrs. James I Phelps 52 wife of the state supreme court justice will be at 2 30 p m tomorrow from the First Christian church. Burial will be in Hose Hill cemetery in Oklahoma City. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Frank War Coronado California a son Dr Malcolm Phelps Fl Rena and three brothers including H C Malcolm Bixby.
Oklahoma and Texas national guard units maneuvering at Camp Bullis near Fort Sam Houston will parade before state officials. Governor Allred and nominees O Daniel and Phillips will review the two thousand cavalrymen as they prepare for Sham battles part of the third army maneuvers. The exercises are the second largest of five in the south and southwest involving 24 000 troops.
In Szombathely near the Austrian border ten-year-old Paul Varga was killed when a pretend duel with a nine-year-old companion produced a bullet from a pistol. The boys had acted out anger as a “field of honor” and retrieved pistols from home. Family members found Paul dying after shots were heard from a locked room.
government crop report forecasts 1938 corn at about 2.566 billion bushels and confirms no sales restrictions. loans set at 57 cents per bushel with no referendum expected. wheat at 985.989 million bushels. cotton and tobacco quotas not activated. Oklahoma corn yield estimated at 31.506 million and cotton at 1.6 hundred thousand bales for 1938.
From Hendaye dispatches insurgent sources claim Franco forces killed or captured all government troops who crossed the Segre Monday night. They say only a few crossed units survived counterattacks while Barcelona reports say the offensive has drawn troops from other fronts. Government updates offer limited detail on eight miles from Barcelona.
Two charred men were found by a search party 16 miles northwest of Woodville identified by papers as Br. C. Miller and H. S. Miller from a Houma to Monroe flight that went missing yesterday. Deputy Whitaker confirmed the identification and location.
City officials began cutting about 60 thousand dollars from the 1938 39 budget estimate after proposing a large increase over last year. Continental Oil announces a limit on crude purchases in the KM A pool of Wichita and Archer counties Texas effective August 1. Purchases from its wells and others will be capped at 75 percent of allowables in the EMA field. In Bryson pool Jack County Texas, purchases will be limited to 20 barrels per day per well.
Attorneys for J E Hall resigned county commissioner and filed motions and stipulations in district court Wednesday mirroring Reed Scott's bid to set aside his June grand jury indictment. Hearing set for August 17 before District Judge Tal Crawford. Indictment accuses Scott of bribery for a $247 county claim and $100 paid to Hall with marked money.
Washington August 10 UP A WPA press rep said any deal by John Harden Oklahoma rock asphalt operator for his road resurfacing program must be with state authorities not WPA. Harden in Washington two or three days had not conferred with WPA and there was no reason to. Federal funds application not yet in Washington but expected to cover asphalt use with an estimated cost of 2,500,900. Rep. Lyle Boren of Skiahema opposes any program discriminating against the use of air in road surfacing projects.
Hollywood Aug 10 Showmen report strong turnout as Emile Ellman at Life Theatre tests three near forgotten shorts Frankenstein Dracula and Son of King Kong. Rentals were low so he cut prices and offered an all night show drawing crowds to midnight screenings in Fort Wayne. Kenneth Fosnaugh, once near blind after a childhood head injury, regained normal vision after a Lake Wawasee dive. Doctors believe the pressure relief helped restore sight.
Wayne L. Carson 23 of Greenwood Ind is charged with manslaughter after a car he drove for a travel bureau crashed into a culvert near the subprison killing a woman and injuring two children. Carson had not slept since 6:30 a m yesterday authorities said. Mrs Gray 55 of Indianapolis died Melba Martin 2 and Jack Hall 10 were injured in the crash en route from Indianapolis to Dallas and Coalgate respectively.
Senator James P. Pope, a staunch administrator ally, conceded defeat in Idaho's Democratic primary as the New Deal became the central issue. He wired congratulations to winner D. Worth Clark, marking the first administration-senator loss in a New Deal–shaped primary. Other results boosted Bulkley in Ohio and Caraway in Arkansas, both administration backers. In Ohio, Charles Sawyer campaigned on reform with CIO support against Governor Davey for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
Oklahoma saw a seasonal heat record of 109 degrees matched Wednesday in Hollis, with forecasters predicting possible relief within 24 hours as other towns such as Waynoka and Bartlesville reported near 108 degrees. Federal observer Harry Wahilgreen noted a cooler pattern and possible thunder showers.
A Konawa three year old girl died and her six year old sister was critically injured when a car driven by Dale Reynolds struck them near the First National Bank on Konawa's main street. Reynolds cited dodging children as cause. his mother rode with him. The accident occurred about 6 39 Wednesday night and the girls were taken to Ada hospital. Funeral arrangements were being made by a Konawa funeral home.
Stonewall 4-H Club tops today at the Stillwater state roundup with eight boys and eight girls earning trips to the Madison Wisconsin national convention. Principal speakers included Tom Cheek of Oklahoma City and Zeb Lawter of Lawton. Winners in ring contests included horticulture and dairy champions from Garvin Foster and Imogene Morgan among others.
Berlin reports Germany will not provide material aid to Japan in the Soviet-Russian-Japanese border dispute. Foreign Minister von Ribbenstrauch was briefed by the Japanese ambassador at Prienwalde, noting Tokyo regards Germany as a sympathetic partner in the anti comintern pact while remaining watchful on developments in the Far East.
Reporter J. D. WRITE YUKI reports from near the Siberian frontier as Soviet artillery and aircraft unleash the month old Changkufeng border dispute. A dense bombardment followed by air attacks and infantry action turned the front into a thunderous clash with heavy explosions and near continuous gunfire.
Oklahoma City OK Aug 10 The state supreme court granted the school board a writ of prohibition blocking Judge Ben Arnold from enforcing suspension orders issued July 2 and July 4 The court reinstated the board subject to an injunction suit and noted suspension should occur only after notice and a hearing The decision contrasted with prior restraining orders involving teachers and contract lists tied to the board.

MOSCOW August 10 official Soviet news agency said an armistice was reached to end fighting on the Siberian Manchoukuo border at noon. A mixed commission will redraw the frontier using an old Chinese map attached to the 1896 treaty. Still unresolved risks remain as both sides guard positions and observers warn leaders may not comply.
