Civil War Vet Abe Mehew of Enid Dies at 90
Abe Mehew, 90, longtime Enid resident and former county official in Garfield and Kay counties, died last week. He served in the 124th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and fought at Vicksburg, Jackson Crossroads, and Benton. Mehew, born May 18 1843 in England, came to America in 1854 and settled in Oklahoma in 1889. He was widowed twice and survived by Amy J. Ketch, seven children, 17 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was honored by the Erwin McDowell post of the Grand Army of the Republic with last rites attended by many friends.
