First Male Teacher Honored As Pontotoc County Teacher Of The Year

C T Holland of Vanoss was named Pontotoc County Teacher of the Year at a secret announcement dinner in the East Central University Student Union Ballroom. The vocational agriculture teacher, known as Cotton, has taught since 1962 and plans to teach until retirement, also holding state and regional roles in Oklahoma vocational agriculture groups.

Milk production up 2.5 percent in March National output rises

Agriculture Department estimates March milk output at 10.6 billion pounds up 2.5 percent from a year earlier and 5.9 percent above March 1975. First quarter output reaches about 29.8 billion pounds, with average per cow at 960 pounds and 11,003,000 milk cows in March. Japan to cut cotton imports in 1976-77 while U.S. shipments to Japan rise past one million bales.

County signs aid directions in Pontotoc Oklahoma

Pontotoc County Extension Homemakers design and install county road signs to mark section intersections. Ada sign shop volunteers produced five inch green signs with white letters costing about seven dollars each. Signs raised awareness and aid emergency responses across Ada and rural Pontotoc County.

New Chemical Triacontanol Might Boost Crop Growth

MSU scientists report a natural alcohol, triacontanol, isolated from alfalfa and beeswax, could raise growth of corn rice barley wheat tomatoes lettuce and cucumbers by 10 to 40 percent under study at the East Lansing experiment station.

Co-ops Seek Bigger Role in U.S. Grain Deals

The Agriculture Department proposed letting cooperatives collect federal price support loans for farmers who grow wheat corn and other grains and run centralized grain pools to boost farmer bargaining power. Critics warn of co-op monopolies and higher food prices while supporters say it fits farmer controlled reserves. Public comment ends May 12. The plan expands co-op participation to grains already used in cotton rice soybeans and honey programs. Also Wool incentive payments fall to 7 million from 41 million due to higher market prices, while a two year Soil Conservation Service erosion study begins.

Farmland real estate taxes rise steadily across decades

The USDA reports farm real estate taxes reached a 1975 nationwide average of 2.92 dollars per acre, up 7.7 percent from 1974, with taxes trending higher since 1944. The study cites rising state and local government expenditures as the main driver, noting Wisconsin up 20.2 percent in 1975.
