The East Central district prepares for the 35th annual interscholastic curricular and sports meet at Norris Field. Thursday marks the start with boys and girls drawing for tournaments, while Friday features journalism events and entry deadlines approach.
The Army will begin mid April rotating veterans out of Korea and replacing them with fresh troops. Secretary Pace says General MacArthur will set selection policy and pace of rotations. Early batches of battle veterans could return within weeks, with monthly rotations potentially reaching about 20,000 men.

Cooler tonight. Temperatures from 38s to mid 50s west, 47 to 50s east. Highs Friday reaching the 60s west to 85 east.
Harold Kidd of the U S Marines Seventh Division writes to his parents about 32 days on the front without shaving or changing clothes. After a ten day rest his unit returned to action. He notes only 13 men remain from his group of about 60, with many killed wounded or captured. Kidd, Ada high school graduate, had served a year with the Marines and was recalled in November sailing January 27 and entering combat February 19.
Heavy rainfall eased drought conditions as showers began Thursday morning, giving Ada .15 inch by 7 am and continuing through the day. Moisture benefited gardens pastures and lawns while cooler weather followed 85 degree highs. northwest towns like Gage and Beaver reported notable totals. Temperatures remained mild with lows near 45 to 0 in the southeast and statewide mid fifties.
Ada Jaycees nominated candidates for office for the coming year. Election is set for April 18 after a program next Wednesday night. Nominees include Bowie Ballard Jr Roland Descans Joe Gifford and Dave Helmey for president and first and second vice presidents. Nominated for recording secretary are Conley Matthews and Milton Landis.
Byng 4-H member Jimmy Watson won a registered Milking Shorthorn heifer for selling the most memberships to the Oklahoma Milking Shorthorn Society. The 16 year old son of R D Watson sold 365 junior cards for 8 dollars and 23 adult cards for 5 dollars, breaking records. He previously began dairy work in the Chamber of Commerce program and now owns seven registered Milking Shorthorn cows. The calf prize, from Ebner Yor Tunden of Chickasha, was calf Feb 23 and out of Tinglen’s best bulls.
Oklahoma City April 5 LP Hillcrest Larry the 4th is going to be a commuting bull. Larry is a $70,500 Hereford co owned by former Oklahoma Governor Roy J. Turner and Henry Sears of Greenwich Connecticut. Sears bought Larry for his Chine farms at Church Hill Maryland at an auction last November outbidding Turner who offered $7. Turner says he purchased half interest in the animal two weeks ago. Larry will spend summers on the coast near Sears and winters at Turner’s sunny Hereford Heaven near Sulphur. His company will be a large select group of high priced heifers. Turner earlier made Hereford news in 1944 when Royal Rupert sold for $38,000 the highest price for any Hereford bull. Rupert later failed as a sire and was destroyed with money refunded. Larry has sired about 20 calves.
President Truman warned that the danger of a third world war remains as serious as ever. He refused to comment on Rayburn’s claim of troop buildup in Manchuria, calling the remark a truth in part while noting broad ongoing efforts. He cited past crises and said Korea remains a current risk while military strategy questions about bombing bases in Manchuria were not answered.
Dorothy Driskill, Ada Red Cross executive secretary for five years, steps down. She is replaced by Hariette V. Schroeder, longtime secretary to Ada Chamber of Commerce head Ron Bailey. Driskill plans to join her husband in the Air Force. she will train her successor and the office will remain in good condition. Flora Betle Turley will take Schroeder’s Chamber post.
Allied troops pushed into central and western Korea along a 40 mile front on the central front. A US task force made the deepest penetration about eight miles north of the boundary as UN forces pressed the Red Chinese lines with heavy artillery and air support. General Ridgway commanded border troops while AP reported Chinese forces arrayed against the UN advance numbered up to 240000 men with dugouts and fortifications shaping the defense.
First Lieutenant Karty C. Davis Jr. died when his F-84 Thunderjet disintegrated during a practice dive near Alexandria Louisiana. Witnesses reported the plane exploded after the wings buckled while attempting to pull out of the dive. Davis is survived by his widow Miriam Davis of Alexandria and his parents Hayy C. Davis and Mrs. Davis of Langley, Oklahoma.
Notable wartime news is mixed with a local obituary note reporting Cpl. Howard Rogers killed in action in Korea while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. Rogers, a Phoenix native and Ada resident, died March 21 from wounds suffered in combat after active service since last August. He earned multiple battle stars and the Purple Heart.

In New York on April 5, Judge Irving R. Kaufman sentences Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to death by electric chair for spying for Russia. He condemns their treason as more heinous than murder and sets the execution for the week of May 21. The Rosenbergs show little emotion as the verdicts are read.
