Tax Assessors Convene for Next Year’s Property Values
The township assessors met at the county clerk’s office Monday to agree on fair values for next year’s assessments. Proposed rates include horses over 1,000 pounds at 100 dollars, mules at 125, cows 15, two year olds 10, one year olds 7, steers 22 for three years, 14 for two years, 9 for one year, hogs at five cents per pound, and standard goods at percentages of invoice. Francis-area settler Tom West dies at 74
Tom West aged 74 died at his home near Francis on Tuesday. He was likely Pontotoc county's oldest settler after forty years in the area. West served as a Confederate soldier and was an honored member of the Masonic fraternity.

Bold Robbery Try at Stonewall Bank Ends With Arrests
A gang of five attempted a bank robbery at the First State Bank of Stonewall around 2 AM delaying the crime with two nitro charges. Shots were exchanged with City Marshall Bolen and Young Carnes, the gang fled along Katy tracks into Boggy bottoms. One robber was wounded and tracked by blood. Three men, Tom Haley Slim Palmer and Blackie Morris, were arrested in Allen but released after no evidence emerged.

Birdwell Attempts Suicide in County Jail
Tom Birdwell drank a mixture of carbolic acid and iodine in the county jail Friday around 10 30 am and was saved by prompt medical aid. Convicted of killing Jim Goodson at Bebee, he faced a ten year term at McAlester but reportedly preferred death to prison. the bottle allegedly was left by Bert Crawford using medicine for a throat trouble.
