Careless Smoking Hazards Highlight Fire Risk
The article warns that discarded matches and smoking materials cause about 30 percent of fires over ten years. It urges precautions such as keeping matches away from children, using nonflammable containers, placing ash trays, fully extinguishing embers, avoiding smoking in beds, and not striking matches in closets or garages.
Faulty Electrical Wiring and Apparatus

Using a fuse with too high amperage defeats protection and may heat wires to ignite fires. Have correct fuses and hire a skilled electrician for repairs. Use UL labeled appliances and avoid exposed wiring hazards.

Most fires from heating equipment result from sub standard components improper installation lack of maintenance and unsafe operation. Ensure clearances from walls keep stoves away from combustibles and insulate nearby walls with suitable material. Clean chimneys annually and repair cracks promptly. Do not overload a furnace and use metal containers for ashes.
