A humorous moment at the Eramosa township garage opening when assistant district engineer P Braithaup used a pen knife to sever the ceremonial tape after scissors were missing. Township officers watched as the tool recovered the event with lighthearted relief while Eramosa reeve D Gray supplied the improvised blade.
After two days of hearings and about 90 witnesses, the Municipal Board adjourned the Acton Esquesing annexation case sine die with no decision on the bid to add 566 acres. The hearing stretched long due to repetitive testimony before adjournment late Wednesday. resumption appears unlikely for at least two weeks.
September 23 meeting at UAW Hall Oakville featured a bake sale and plans for a Spring Festival and a membership canvass. Special speaker Fred Young of Toronto urged Canada to increase Colombo Plan aid to help underdeveloped nations and curb communism, warning of the threat of atomic war if wealth gaps persist.
Union Cemetery Association of Mimosa in Erin township votes to fund perpetual care for Unmon Cemetery. A $30 assessment per plot is set. trustees Earl Jessop Cuyler Wheeler Jessie Reid and Mrs Victor Mills lead. Twenty members pledge $600. contacts with plot owners to follow.
Public school principals of Halton county gathered in Acton on Tuesday September 2 with L L Gruce and Robert Bornhold presiding. With about 25 principals now, they agreed to add a vice president and a three member program committee to the executive. Bo Hopkins of Bronte is president and Fred Brown of Oakville the secretary. Policy and plans for the coming year were discussed. Mr Skuce spoke and Mr Bornhold displayed student entrance examination graphs showing notable results.
Enrolment starts this week for Acton night school classes with 15 students required per class. Mrs. W J Beatty requests applications mailed to Acton High School. Courses include shop work oil painting weaving leather craft and millinery under Halton night school committee supervision.
Supplies convener Mrs George Musselle displayed a baby layette received from a candy and baking sale. Mrs A K Mann presided with worship led by Mrs Van Fleet and Mrs W Watkins. Mrs Bob Adams read council notes from Winnipeg. a fall speaker was planned with Mrs Ingies and Mrs Leishman coordinating.
An accident caused a telephone pole to be knocked awry by a vehicle. The incident disrupted lines and sparked a response from responders. No injuries are reported, and the scene is being cleared.
Wiener Roast opened the fall season at Mansell Nellis' farm on Thursday evening September 23 hosted by Y's Men’s club. Charlie Leatherland directed the social event with a sing song program and refreshments served to attendees.
Acton area schools win three Dominion Provincial bursaries this year among Halton County total of eight. Ena Jennings earns 240 for Ontario Teachers College Hamiton course. Mary Braida and Nancy Lambert win 100 each for general courses. Braida studies in Guelph. Lambert remains in school.
Acton YMCA enters 1954 with boiler repairs completed and fires started. Secretary Bob Brayshaw announces a busy season with a new plant of programs including badminton, Phalanx club, judo, housewives club, and expanded youth and sports activities. Douglas Cook presents a hydro conversion film at a student assembly.
Revom A Currey of Acton spoke at Eden Mills United church anniversary service with Ebenezer and Arkell churches withdrawing their views. Arkell choir sang as W Slinn preached in Acton morning service. Evening speaker Rev W J Holley Halton Priory spoke at Eden Mills anniversary.
The Grand Jury praised Halton Centennial Manor for cleanliness and morale while noting 73 residents and an overcrowded women’s section, and urged a new wing. It found the county jail kitchen inadequate and recommended modern storage and expanded fruit and vegetable facilities. The Registry Office was described as overcrowded and overtaxed, with a call to consolidate and substantially enlarge the building.
The Knox Ladies' Aid held its September meeting in the church parlor led by Mrs. F J McCutcheon with prayers and Bible reading by Mrs. John Allison. Reports from secretary treasurer and managers discussed past month activities and alterations. Plans for a wedding reception and final arrangements for the annual turkey dinner were set with committees for programs publicity purchasing and table convener leadership. The group adjourned to the basement for a social half hour.
Cash prizes were given to top Royal Conservatory exam performers at the Music Study group gathering hosted by Mrs. Mary Jane Force. Miss Elizabeth Jang, Miss Christine Lamb, and Mrs. C Heller received awards, with Lamb’s prize accepted by her mother. The event featured piano solos and a program centered on themes and variations and the rhapsody. Special guests and teachers attended, led by president Mrs. Ro Arnold.
Ronald McKnight received an autograph from Marilyn Bell at the seventh annual Ontario Federation for the Cerebral Palsied conference held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Saturday September 25. Bell, guest of honor, spoke briefly and pledged support with Guy Ryder to help crippled children at the Lakeshore swimming club. Mrs W J McKnight praised Bell’s pleasant manner and small stature.
Nassagaweya in Halton County unveiled a new $14 000 township garage, the first in 27 years. Officials led by Reeve A Service praised planning, expansion readiness, and the county work force as the audience of about 100 celebrated with a ribbon cutting and dance. The project aims to ease municipal operations and avoid debentures, with a planned 1.2 mill increase if needed.
Acton Y's Men and three wives attended the regional convention in Sarnia on September 18 and 19. Wes Wolfe won a golf prize. Sonny Rognvald son was the first out-of-town delegate to register and was interviewed by the London newspaper.
