A sudden cloud burst dampened the 46th Acton Fair Saturday. Weather hampered events and cut attendance from the 1947 peak of 10 000 to an estimated 5 000. Friday night set an attendance record though gate receipts totaled 1 140 for Saturday and 650 for Friday with 171 from the dance.
A gathering was held for Miss Lorrar Paces Grace at the hospital where a Bible service was shared. The ceremony concluded with cake and tea, and a farewell for Batterson during the church event attended by many.
A surprise party was held for a local resident with friends in Galt and Acton. The gathering featured euchre and cake gifts, with Mrs Mowat Sr delivering a suitable speech during the event.
Three night school classes are planned for Acton this fall and winter in addition to Milton offerings. A. T. Woodley chairs the Halton Night School committee. Acton committee head is Mrs. W. J. Beatty, with R. Licata leading Georgetown. Courses begin Tuesday November 17 and run weekly for 12 weeks.
Mrs Willon Denny hosted the Acton Women’s Institute meeting with Mrs R L Davidson presiding. Members welcomed a new friend and discussed the motto Service. Mrs Walderspen told an Annapolis Valley apple loss story, and Miss War Hoesen chaired the Ohare Vaath event. The note ends with a remark that Canadians drink more coffee than tea.
A local garden show at W.1 Gardens saw blooms and vegetables judged while floral arrangements were displayed. Judges named include Bernee Parweter and Thomasina Sutton among others, with prizes awarded for top entries and notes on seed providers and unusual specimens.
The Alert Evening Auxiliary of Knox Church holds its monthly meeting at Mrs Russell Patterson’s home. Mrs James Inglis presides in the president’s absence. Devotions were led by Miss Florence Elliott and readings by Mrs Robert Adams. The topic covered gifts and responsibilities with a social potluck and awards after a personality test.
Ray H. Costerus will study at McMaster University and serve as pastor of the Acton Baptist Church after four and a half years in Ontario. He moves to Acton with wife and two children, Ruth and Polly, joining local families and attending church meetings while his Australian parents recall missionary work in China.
The Ontario Municipal Board dismissed Acton’s 300 acre annexation application after hearing in June. The board found no sound reason for annexation beyond financial gain to Acton at the township’s expense. Officials discussed seeking further counsel advice on next steps.
