Acton residents are invited to a week titled Open House Week at the Acton YMCA with daily events. The schedule features badminton, shuffleboard, ping pong, dancing, and social hours for adults juniors and seniors across Monday to Friday with special theme nights and activities.
Three vehicles including a truck were in a Petersburg crash at the New Dundee road and Stratford highway intersection last Thursday. J H Denny of Acton slowed for a turn without signaling, prompting M J Kelfer to attempt a pass. Denny’s car then hit Kelfer, struck a beverage truck driven by Alex Cubon, veered into a parked car owned by HR Shantz, with Denny’s car sustaining the most damage. No injuries were reported.
A barn on James Thompson's farm one mile north of Erin was burned early Sunday causing about 8000 dollars in damage. Hogs grain and hay were lost. Firefighters aided by steamers prevented spread to nearby buildings. In a separate crash on the York Road Cecilia Synmute sustained a severe head injury and was removed to hospital after McCutcheon car overturned. Alvin McCutcheon, brother of Acton's reeve, was involved.
Acton's Junior Hockey Club elected officers for the year at the annual meeting. Jack Kentner was chosen coach with the club planning to enter the Ontario Hockey Association season and operate a Fall Fay booth and refreshment stand at the arena.
A pleasant event at Mrs. Babcock's home honored Miss Dorothy Babcock as guest of honor before her marriage. Friends from Brampton and nearby attended. tea and a light lunch were served by Mrs. Wm. Babcock and Mrs. Gordon Babcock, with the bride-to-be receiving many gifts.
The Crewsons Corners meeting house was filled for the dedication of the Chas. W. Lambert Memorial Chapel. Roy Wansbrough of Toronto funded the project and turned the building over to the community after roof and foundation repairs and interior painting. Capt Poulton of the Brampton Salvation Army led the ceremony with remarks by Wansbrough.
The commission met Monday evening with Commissioners Manson and Reeve present. A letter from the Preston Water Committee detailing Hell Cinephone Co's request to ground lightning arresters on water mains was read. Payment plans for range installations were ordered ended and a new outside metre plan approved with a trial installation at a residence.
Hon P M Dewan addressed a large crowd as Acton Fair marked its Silver Jubilee with higher attendance and record exhibits. The report highlights improved flower displays Ladies Work Department new exhibitors and growing Women's Institutes plus a strong Historical Exhibit and farm artifacts that attracted many visitors.
Joe Gardiner of Speyside was hit while crossing near his home at the Esquesing Township intersection. He sustained a fractured skull and other injuries and died Tuesday in Guelph General Hospital after remaining unconscious, with an inquest likely forthcoming. The car, possibly driven by Ernest Hall of Guelph, swerved to avoid him.
Dr T A Moore a native of Acton and former Moderator of the Unjust Church of Canada suffered a heart attack while in St John New Brunswick. He had arrived to address a service club event when the illness occurred prompting concern among friends and relatives in Acton.
John A McDonald 65 longtime Lambton County bailiff died in Sarnia General Hospital from injuries after being thrown from a car driven by A Morrison Halvrough at the Devine Milton streets intersection. He suffered fractured ribs vertebrae pelvis and a dislocated shoulder. He is a brother of Mrs Alex McDonald Acton.
A two ton trailer carrying wild west show equipment was struck by a freight car at the CNR crossing on Mill Street. The wreck scattered fencings saddles and gear while the train crew freed equipment and the vehicle, leaving debris across the area. Damages and injuries were noted, with investigators Chief McPheron and Night Constable Locker on site.
The last weekly puzzle yielded the words Pimples and Whiskers as answers. Mrs BM Porter of Acton Well won the award, and readers are invited to try the new challenge on Page Five this week.
The Municipal Council of Erin met at Hillsburg to appoint chartered accountant T H Brock of Kitchener to audit township books. Reeve and deputy preside as the solicitor handles the contract. Meetings adjourned with notes on licenses and audit start.
On Sunday afternoon near Acton a car driven by Mr W R Blair slid off the road as loose gravel caused the vehicle to swerve into a ditch. The machine did not roll over and no one was seriously injured. passenger Mrs Thos Scott sustained no head injury and other riders were unharmed.
The Esquesing Council met on a Wednesday with members May, Murrey, and Harrop present. Reports from Motor Vehicles and Highway departments were read, expenses approved, and several payments authorized including livestock losses, health accounts, and wheat growth benefits. By law No. 608 authorized provisional distributions and financial actions were approved.
