The Reversing Falls of Saint John

The Visitor to Saint John New Brunswick learns of Fort Howe Martello tower and Fort Saint John historic sites. The famous reversing falls occur as the Saint John River runs uphill during rising tides, with a 350 foot wide narrow channel and 100 foot limestone banks. The harbor tides average 26 feet, creating a daily tide river clash. Indigenous legends ascribe the falls to Glooscap and include tales of Big Beaver and a dam that formed Part Ridge Island.
