Local Industry Expansions Outline New Plant Additions
Acton Micro Plastics and A P Green Co announce expansion plans adding about 9 180 square feet for warehouse space and modern equipment after a fire destroyed the previous plant. The Acton site will grow to 1 000 additional square feet with two new production lines. completion slated for six weeks with production possible by December 1. The A P Green building replaces the destroyed fire resistant plant and will be chiefly masonry with steel trusses, slated for early completion.

Car Fire Destroys 1937 Chevrolet on Mill Street
A 1937 Chevrolet owned by Harry E Smith of Oshawa caught fire on Mill Street Sunday morning around 10:30. Defective wiring caused the blaze. the Acton fire brigade extinguished it while the Smith family were inside Watson's Dairy Bar. Damage to the car was about $275.

Lame Scots Fourth In Expo Competition
The Lame Scots Band placed fourth at the Canadian National Exhibition on Thursday August 28 after a two hour delay in draw. They faced noise from an air show and were short of instruments, while London Tech Concert Band won with 259 points followed by RCAF Hamilton 241 and 57th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment Welland 231. The Lorne Scots will receive a detailed constructive critique later.

Enrolment Soars at Public School on Tuesday
The public school reports its largest enrolment ever with 444 pupils last year and a 2 percent rise this year. Principal G W McKenzie notes growth since 1939 from about 285 students. Acton Students Win Dominion Bursaries
Two Acton students received Dominion provincial student aid bursaries. Jack Davidson, former Acton high student, won a $300 bursary to attend Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto. Miss Marjory Warne, in grade 13, won a $100 general course bursary. The two were Acton’s only applications.

Obituary for Thom as W. R. Salmon Acton mayor elect
Thom as W. R. Salmon 70 died in Acton Thursday. He served as Acton mayor in 1951 and retired due to ill health. A Boer War and World War I veteran, he was a machinist at CSMR Stratford and longtime Acton resident. Survived by wife Melanie Cooke and four sons, two daughters, and several relatives. Requiem Mass held at St Josephs Church, with interment at Erin Cemetery.

Churchill community and church members honored Mrs. Mary Rutledge at Woodside school on Labor Day. After a program of music and dancing, Ralph McKeown read an address and Clarence Harding presented a purse. Mrs. Rutledge, resident for 23 years, departs Thursday to join daughter Mrs. Richard Greene in Denver.

Beardmore Co Workers Reject Company Offer After Vote
Beardmore and Co union officials met employees to discuss terms. Ballots showed 139 in favor and 176 against the final offer with four spoiled ballots. The offer followed a Concil liation Board recommendation and added one month of retroactive pay for three months total. Company also proposed removing the escape clause from the pension security section.

Acton council approves tentative plans for a new fire hall behind the town hall on Bower Ave. Chief F Dawkins says funds will come from contributions and volunteers with work to start only after financial assurance. The two story cement block hall is sized about 30 by 65 feet with space for four trucks and drill area on the first floor and a rec area on the second. Esquesing and Nassagaweya sign on for a fire area centered around Acton while Erin Township declines. A separate sewerage debenture of 17 000 is sent to the Municipal Board and previous issues total 425 000. The council considers a five or three member Public Utilities Commission and modernizes old fire by law. A lot agreement and a fence dispute are also discussed.
