The council appointed special committees meet with Canada Packers Limited and Beardmore officials to discuss industrial sewage treatment for Acen. This follows October 18 council action shelving a new plant and extending existing facilities for domestic sewage only, with a later resolution to negotiate further.
Mrs James Ingles led the Alert Evening Auxiliary meeting at Knox, with a Thanksgiving service prepared by Mrs Earl Marshall. Mrs John L Daveidan read the lesson as the group closed with a responsive progress. Mrs George Somerville spoke on education in Japan and reports for the month were read. Laura Wilex and Robert Adan were noted as winners in a leadership gathering, with a Christmas program planned for December and copper funeral funds discussed.
Bruce Andrews, 17, of Acton, ran 2.5 miles in 12 minutes 5 seconds at the Canadian Cross Country championships in Hamilton to eclips the previous record by 31 seconds. Teammate Bob Coxe, also of Acton, finished ninth as the Guelph Legion Track Club won the team prize.
The Halton Teacher Institute met in Oakville on Friday October 2 with sessions for Senior Division at Oakwood school and Junior Division at Kinbrook school. Officials and inspectors spoke on arithmetic and geography while the afternoon feature was a lecture by Larry Henderson on the Middle East and Behind the Iron Curtain. Officers for 1957 58 were elected including honorary president JM Denyes and president Frank Connolly.
Douglas Robbins of Rockwood was invested into the First Rockwood Cub Pack after a Toronto Scout saved him in a 1966 cave accident. The tale recalls James West and Max Schaluk aiding Robbins and keeping a tourniquet until hospital treatment in Guelph.
Knox Presbyterian voted unanimously to accept the 1958 budget at a congregational dinner in the Legion Auditorium. About 100 lay members will participate in the November stewardship canvass with D Allen J. Buchanan outlining the plan and parish leaders presenting church work summaries.
Wool Combing Corp of England and Canada with Bradford Dyers Association create Parkside Combing Co in England. A major sale of machinery from Acton and Galt plants nets cash and a 20 percent stake in the new firm. A 30 000 share expansion and board size rise to nine directors are approved. Model Dye Works of Canada is acquired with a five year option on 10000 shares at 5 to 9 a share.
The Knox church Ladies Aid met in the parlor with Mrs. Wm. Mc Lead presiding to arrange details for an upcoming turkey dinner. Mrsay F. Anderson led worship and committee reports outlined tasks for serving. The Mizpah benediction closed the meeting.
Acton branch of the Canadian Legion gears up for Poppy Day and the Remembrance Day service on November 11. Mayor E Tyler proclaims Remembrance Day. the Legion distributes pamphlets to schoolchildren detailing the blood red poppy symbol and honoring soldiers from World War I and beyond.
The Scottish Country Dance Club met Friday October 23 at Pariah Hall MC with Mr Jim Fleming guiding Virginia Reel and Gay Gordons. Guests from Guelph including the Dochertys and director Vigor attended as plans for a season were discussed. The next meetings are November 15 and a St Andrew's Night event on November 30.
Judge Ray A Austin of Guelph Juvenile Court told Acton Millon Georgetown Rotary clubs the value of home and school in child development. He urged schools to consider education costs carefully, warned against overemphasizing discipline in place of character, and stressed parental involvement at home.
Rev G McMullen spoke at Acton United Church anniversary services on October 27 describing early settlers and religious freedom. He highlighted the United Empire Loyalists and shared a family story of hardship, while noting Christianity demands sacrifice and patience.
The Barrie Hill Church in Erin Township marked its 97th year since the present structure was built and 125 years since the congregation formed. Guest minister Rev W G Trose of Harcourt Memorial Church Guelph led the morning service. Rev BOM Newham of Barrie Hill preached, with Mr Rose guest during the service. Evening worship was led by Rev Mo Jo McLeod of Trinity United Church Guelph, new to the district.
