Chief J Newton and Deputy S Tennant led a surprise fire drill at Robert Little School Acton High School and Bennett School. Pupils evacuated in 39 40 seconds with quick orderly exits and strong teacher cooperation.
The Ontario area PUC urged Councillor Cook to apologize for remarks at a council meeting about the engineers report on the sewage treatment plant expansion. The commission defended its rights and noted it would monitor debentures and water services while addressing a joint meeting with council.
Acton Scout Committee appeals for donations to cover a 3400 deficit from Scout Hall renovations. The hall, built to provide a 10000 headquarters for Acton Boy Scouts and related groups, aims to expand quarters to meet growth and reduce waiting lists. Contributions may be tax deductible at local banks and Watsons Restaurant.
Contacted in Toronto on Wednesday M Pallant owner of the building formerly occupied by the Bank of Montreal could not verify a rumor that the building would house a Bank of Canada branch. He said final plans are not made and he cannot reveal the occupant while renovations include steel work above the first floor and interior changes.
J. Flemming owner of the Mayfair Restaurant announced this week the gate of his business to Mr and Mrs G Kerr of Sudbury. The new owners take possession on October 15. Future plans include moving to Guelph later, with the Flemming family remaining in Acton for some time.
Last Saturday veterans of the Fifth Battalion CEF gathered in Acton for a reunion at the Leogmn Auditorium. A turkey dinner followed at 6 30 pm served by the Acton Legion Ladies Auxiliary with Mayor E Tyler and Legion President V Patrick attending. At 7 30 pm the veterans, led by the Acton Citizens Band and their Regimental Flag, paraded to the cenotaph where a wreath was placed for fallen comrades.
Corporal R Mason of the local OPP announced staff changes this week. Duncan has been transferred to North Bay headquarters and is replaced by Bob Moreau of the Dundas D HQ and former local officer who starts this week replacing Constable Duncan.
Last Sunday afternoon Georgetown hosted Boy Scouts and Wolf Cubs from the North Halton District for a parade and Scouts Own church service in the park. Approximately 400 scouts from Erin Gren Williams Hullsburgh Georgetown Milton and Acton formed at Georgetown High School and, led by the Georgetown band, marched to the park. Rev Kenneth Richardson Rev Alfred Baker and Rev M G McFarlane assisted at the service with the band accompanying the hymns.
This week’s issue faces production delays and interruptions caused by National Film Board crews filming a TV project in town. Staff note ongoing efforts to restore normal publishing, asking readers for patience amid the disruption.
The Gold Str group in the Junior Y gym class won top honors during the regular meeting Tuesday night. Y secretary D Docherty noted the class is split into four groups and each competes within the Acton activity segment, with Lightningae as a listed group.
Boer War veterans gathered for a reunion last Sunday in Acton. They laid a wreath at the cenotaph, held a memorial service, then went to Upham or Up Heptis church for dinner and nostalgia. Fred Coles and Charlie Withers are the town’s last surviving Boer War veterans.
Mayor B Tyler said contact continues with an unknown benefactor who offered a financial gift for Acton. He noted companies have been approached for equipment and materials and forms prepared to finalize an agreement once plans are approved, remaining hopeful for a settlement.
Acton athletes led Milton event medals with Ruth Lands borough claiming wins in the 73 and 100 yard dashes and medals in the running broad jump. Anhe Paanuth earned multiple titles in senior events while Frank Mariscak and Frank Cooper won several dashes and jumps in intermediate and senior classes.
The planning board finished a by law draft to govern new industries while not altering Beardmore tannery operations. They discussed nuisance concerns, dust control, and fire risk, plus zoning changes for R-2 housing and occupancy certificates before permits. Public hearings are planned soon.
Halton County council discussed Bronte entering the new Land Titles Act system for registering deeds. Reeve Tom Millward said Bronte would cover all switching costs approx 3000 dollars. The move set a precedent as other municipalities may follow.
Kenneth C Partridge, longtime Rotarian and former Rotary International director and district governor, was the guest speaker at the Acton Rotary Club last Tuesday. He is a partner in a Port Credit law firm, born in Brampton, and a graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School.
