Roses cut in afternoon last longer than morning says Cornell
Cornell University floriculture assistant Joseph Howland reports roses cut in the afternoon outlast those cut in the morning by up to 10 hours due to higher leaf sugar content. He notes sugar powder alone fails, as bacteria increase, and calls for a antibacterial additive with sugar to extend vase life. He also finds short stemmed roses with few leaves last as long as long stems with many leaves.
